Andre Controls Fire
Andre Bauer was reportedly on national TV just a minute ago providing expert updates about the Grand Strand fire, talking about his airborne efforts to assess the damage and generally giving the impression that he was in total control of the situation.
Which isn’t at all surprising considering the fact that fire is Andre Bauer’s mistress … he controls it.
Anyway, one coastal lawmaker started peppering FITS with text messages shortly after a constituent saw Bauer soaking up the boob tube limelight:
I am giving him fair warning … we do not need fake PR schemes and style over substance … I am sick of him using his office to blatantly campaign for governor. We need help from folks who are in authority and can handle fires … he is not a fireman …
If he wants to help fine … stay out of the way and stop pretending to be in control of something you’re not.
Damn! It is officially on!
Frankly, we’ve always wondered about the utility of politicians visiting disaster zones.
On the one hand, you pretty much have to go because you don’t want to look like you don’t care … on the other hand, most politicians just get in the way and come off as opportunistic-looking.
Or just plain opportunistic.
If a politician is going to visit a disaster area, we think there should be a rule where they actually have to work, not just walk around and look at stuff or talk into a bank of microphones.
Seriously, think about the props a political leader would get if he or she actually did something other than walk-and-talk … i.e. like breaking a sweat in the trenches?
And letting trained emergency experts take the questions?
A simple “I’m just here to help, talk to that person if you want a comment” would do more than 1,000 of the most artfully-crafted words.

I believe Andre must have taken lessons from Chellis who is using “future scholars” to blatantly campaign for reelection to treasurer at taxpayers expense. It never ends!!

I wonder if he had a state patrol escort to Myrtle Beach or drove himself at 100 mph – obviously he didn’t fly himself cause he made it over there in one piece.

Bauer is “style over substance”. There is nothing he won’t do or say to get press.
Typical bs politican.
He has been on the public payroll half of his life. It is time for him to make an honest living, hopefully somewhere else.

Lt. Governor Andre Bauer will fly over the fire scene Friday afternoon at 3 pm with North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Director William Bailey. The lieutenant governor’s Office on Aging has been asked by the federal Administration on Aging for the status of the fire and how it has affected seniors and senior facilities. He will depart by helicopter from the Grand Strand airport.
By Ginny on April 24th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
It would have been far easier and better for the Administration on Aging to contact the:
1. Governor (who has responsibilities for problems such as these), or
2. The Emergency Preparedness Center for SC (the multimillion dollar state facility full of experts that are monitoring the situation).
Perhaps Mr. Adams, instead of playing on the computer and reading blogs all day, should have mentioned the above to the feds so as to save the expense of sending a know nothing politician up in an expensive helicopter.
Oops, I forgot…there is no press coverage for Bauer in sending the feds to the proper source. My bad.

more cost more cost, more cost. What happened to the already exising reports and flyovers? Can’t a memo to his office be sufficient?
By Harold on April 24th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Is Bauer for Governor paying for the chopper??
They would be the only ones getting value out of this stunt.

Andre Bauer to a camera is like a scuzzy drunk to cheap ripple. He just can’t get enough. Maybe, just maybe, he will actually earn press for DOING something, not just pretending…
By roofus on April 24th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Bauer’s flyover is as useful as Obama’s burning of 9,000+ gallons of high-octane, ozone-depleting jet-fuel in order to “celebrate” Earth Day.

I agree with Pres that many people are clueless about Andre. He’s worse than they think.

Sanford wants to cut money for wildfire fighting
COLUMBIA, SC (AP) – Gov. Mark Sanford is not backing down from his proposal to trim $1 million in state spending from wildfire fighting, even as damages mount in a fire near Myrtle Beach.
Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said Friday that a fee on homeowners’ insurance policies for firefighter training is working and an additional fee would work for forest fire protection, too.
But one of Sanford’s top allies is backing away from plans to cut money for wildfire fighting.
Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort said Friday he’s dropping the cuts from a spending plan he’s been trying to win support for this week.
The Forestry Commission has suffered with other agencies in state budget cuts. It has lost a fifth of its budget in the past year. The agency warned in an August letter that the cuts were putting property and firefighters at risk.
