SC Politicos Move To “Restrain” Sewell

stand-back

Whether he’s threatening to kill himself, feigning a life-threatening disease, passing out drunk in public or “cracking skulls” on behalf of SCGOP candidate Karen Floyd, SC Hotline editor Jeffrey Sewell is always one of the most entertaining characters in the incestuous echo chamber of South Carolina politics.

He’s what we in the information business refer to as “good copy,” a seemingly endless fount of self-humiliating humor who remains too arrogant to stop talking and too stupid to see that everyone is laughing at – not with – him.

Sewell – who was the runaway winner of our “Slow Zebra” award earlier this year – has managed to make himself the laughing stock of South Carolina politics, a title we were convinced that Sic Willie would carry with him to his grave.

We quit taking Sewell’s phone calls several months ago, but he has continued to bombard us with unsolicited e-mails – many of them barely coherant ramblings sent in the wee hours of the morning.

Full of tall tales and idle threats, we’ve always viewed (and portrayed) Sewell as a harmless lightweight – an annoying social gadfly who posed little to no threat to anyone other than himself.

That perception could be changing, however.

Two S.C. political bloggers who have been targeted in the past by Sewell’s antics have apparently had enough – and are moving to have orders of protection filed that would prohibit the Ascot-wearing web “mogul” from harassing them.

Wait … harrassment? orders of protection?

Aren’t those typically terms reserved for legitimately dangerous people?

We thought such a defensive step was odd considering Sewell’s “village idiot” persona, and so we sat down the other day with one of these bloggers, who has evidently been doing some research into Sewell’s background.

The blogger, who spoke with us on condition of anonymity, produced documents which are alleged to be criminal complaints filed against Sewell in the past – complaints involving firearms.

We agreed beforehand not to publish these documents (somebody else wants that exclusive, apparently), but we were shocked to see Sewell’s name associated with these reports.

After all, ascots and allegations of violence typically don’t mix, people.

We will certainly keep you updated on this situation as it plays out on our rival blogs – and will be looking to see how the ownership of SC Hotline decides to do respond.

I applaud these bloggers. I’m not a blogger but have received the same t
ypes of threats via facebook and twitter from that guy. They are often unintelligible, but they eventually warrent a response. This guy has to be dealy with and legally seems to be the best option.

Is this like a family i-n-t-e-r-v-e-n-t-i-o-n?

As in, you are surrounded…

I always thought you other bloggers were encouraging Sewell to make yourselves look better. This is a sad situation, if even some of these allegations are true. But, Sic. Wouldn’t it be barely coherent ramblings as opposed to barely incoherent ramblings? I mean, while we’re casting stones….. I hope Sewell gets his demons under control.

The really sad part is his incoherent rambling emails come as frequently at noon as they do at midnight. I hope these allegations about previous firearms issues get a detailed explanation to substantiate such a serious claim. Everyone thought Phil Spector was just eccentric until he shot someone.

it’s probably Wes Donahue, he knows something about restraining orders

Are you people kidding me? If this Mr. Sewell has a legitimate drinking problem, then the has a disease. Would you laugh and mock someone with Downs or Diabetes? Alcoholism is a serious illness and should be treated as such. You bullies should be ashamed of yourself. His intelligence is unmatched and his dedication to the SC Republican Party is unparalleled. I hope we all stand by our friend in his time of need.

Will:
We have all figured out he is nuts. Let him hang himself – no need to kick someone when they are down

Ms. Fitzgerald,

If you think that, you’ve obviously you’ve got a “whiff of Downs” yourself.

The guy bought SC Hotline when it was one of the hottest websites in the state. Getting posted there made a blogger. Not so now. Whatever the reason, SC Hotline is becoming more irrelevant. I will not join in the accusations that the new owner is a drunk or mentally ill. I find that stuff Bush League. There is more than one politico in SC who has been seen drunk in the Vista or acted crazy as hell one night. If that disqualified someone from playing in SC politics, three fourths of the legislature, and about all the consultants would have to go home.

But, I will note that SC Hotline has greatly declined. It is no longer the “go to” source for news and opinion.

wow one meaningless blogger attacks another meaningless blog all reported to you by a meaningless person like sick William great

FITS,

You better be nice to Mr. Sewell. He is one of the “top inside-the-circle senior advisers” to the next Chairman of the State GOP. She is said, by Mr. Sewell himself no less, to “rely very heavily on his council.” He brokers her backroom deals for her so you better show a little respect since he is a heartbeat away from being the most important Republican spokesman in SC, perhaps the universe. Be warned. Don’t make us bust a cap in your… well, you get the picture.

By Earl Capps on April 15th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Ashley Cooper, you meant to say “Don’t make us bust a cap in your… ASCOT”, right?

He doesn’t broker jack-shiite. He just huffs and puffs and threatens people, hoping to get people to back down from him and take credit for landing a deal. It’s rather sad when you think about it.
