Where Did This Money Come From?

578-million

The dire predictions of what will happen to “the state of South Carolina” if Gov. Mark Sanford follows through on his threat to reject $700 million of bureaucratic bailout money are neglecting one thing – well, make that 578 million things.

Or more precisely, $578 million.

Sanford and several State Senators backing his play joined together today to point out that Senator Hugh Leatherman is ignoring $578 million in federal bailout cash (money that the governor can’t block) in the Senate Finance Committee’s “doom and gloom” budget – you know, the state spending plan that fires eleventy kabillion teachers and sets eleventy kabillion prisoners free from maximum security prisons to roam your neighorhoods at night.

Oh, we almost forgot, Leatherman’s “doom and gloom” plan isn’t counting the nearly $790 million that South Carolina’s local school districts have tucked away in carry-foward reserve funds, either.

Pressured on the floor of the State Senate earlier today by Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort), Leatherman conceded that the $578 million wasn’t included in the Senate Finance budget because “we haven’t voted on it yet.”

“Well Senator, we haven’t voted on any of it,” Davis fired back.

Good point.

For those of you pulling out your calculators now, we’ll save you the trouble … $700 million minus $578 million = $122 million.

Which is not a whole helluva lot … particularly when the schools that are supposedly going to have to fire all those teachers are (again) sitting on $790 million.

Of course, no matter what Sanford does these ass clown politicians of ours are going to get their hands on the $700 million anyway because let’s face it – U.S. Majority Whip Jim Clyburn still has some taxpayer-funded monuments that he needs to erect and slap his name on in this state.

Trust us, people … there’s a “James E. Clyburn Pedestrian Overpass” coming to a city near you!

The Medicaid money is automatic. Nobody gets to vote on any of it. The increased federal match rate was increased by the feds and comes in every day rain or shine. it is money coming inand can’t be accepted or regected. Its just there. It will flow to the health agencies no matter what.

Boy, are you some kind of a party pooper. You just had to go and add facts to the equations. You know that the libs are more in to feeling the pain of the underpriveledged and will use any excuse to get there grubby little hands on do re mi.

They remind me so much of a saying by a former employee who was fond of telling me that he would always tell me the truth. Even if he had to make it up.

Has a familiar ring to it doesn’t it.

Common sense would be for these moron legislators to use the 578 million they have available a shut their pie holes about how Mark Sanford is causing the end of the world as we know it.

Please Will, Leatherman is the Senate’s Leprechaun. Catch him and find his pot o’ gold.

We all know they write a lousy budget in Committee and make it rain when it comes to the floor. Senators have a pet project, go kiss the ring and voila, I got your line item right here Senator.

Usually, the bag man is State Economist John Maynard Gillespie. This time, we got ourselves a high ranking one – President Barry himself.

It’s all too predictable to even be called predictable.

yippppeee, Sanford made his point, that disaster when he appeared on CNN last fall is forgotten and the path is clear for our nit twit care taker governor to run for higher office on doing nothing that actually matters.

I’d love to have seen NC’s Gov. Bev Perdue drive her pickup down to Columbia to pick the $700M as offered. Lucky for Mark it’s hard to look stupid when the surrounding states governors are Sonny and Bev Perdue(Mark Easley was a twit too)

Y’all help me understand. If the money is going somewhere and we are going to foot the bill no matter where it goes, why not accept it? Can’t it be spent to replace the money already cut from the budget because of the poor economy? Economists predict recovery over the next two years. From what I understand it will be used to maintain state eployment instead of adding to the payroll. Am i misinformed or is this party politics run amuck?

SLED Director says: “God help us now.”

…”Reggie Lloyd on Thursday openly disagreed with his boss — Gov. Mark Sanford — over Sanford’s plan to use federal stimulus money.

Not spending the $700 million as intended by the White House would have “devastating” consequences for state and local law enforcement agencies in South Carolina, the state’s top cop said.

An agitated Lloyd, 42, told The State newspaper …he “didn’t care” if his views get him in trouble with Sanford, who nominated him in January 2008 to lead the state’s premier investigative agency.

“I’ve thought long and hard about it; it’s not personal,” said Lloyd, a former state circuit judge and U.S. attorney for South Carolina. “My professional career has been devoted to … public safety, and I’m not going to sacrifice that for anybody. This means more to me than this job does.”

Lloyd said the proposed cuts come at a time when South Carolina has ranked in recent years at or near the top in the nation in the rate of violent crime.

“We were doing that when times were good,” he said. “God help us now.”

Since Sanford has folded, has anybody asked the legislature what programs they’re going to expand so the next time money is tight they can roll out the normal crowd of crying cops and teachers. Seems Sanford has spent the past four or five years trying to talk the legislature into fiscal responsibilty. They ignored and overturned his vetos repeatedly, now they’re blaming him? Wait a minute….this is a Democratic legislature isn’t it? Sure sounds like DC….its all the other persons fault I’m being irresponsible.
