Rumors began swirling through Palmetto political circles today that veteran lobbyist and RINO political consultant J. Warren Tompkins was considering a run for chairman of the SCGOP.

The rumors began this morning after Columbia attorney Kevin Hall announced his decision to drop out of the race due to health issues, but by mid-afternoon they had erupted into a full-fledged cacophony.

We don’t know if there’s any validity to these rumblings or not, but we can say without any hesitation or fear of contradiction that a Tompkins candidacy would be absolutely disastrous to the Republican Party.

Unless, of course, the SCGOP wants to formally declare its independence from fiscal conservatism, choice in education, government restructuring, transparency and a whole host of other conservative reforms.

Warren Tompkins has not only sold out everything the Republican Party stands for – he’s helped elect dozens of “GOP” politicians who have done the same.

His record is one of serving special interests, not the taxpayers of South Carolina, which is precisely the wrong message Republicans need to be sending right now.

Republicans should “just say no” to Warren Tompkins.

[Update] Jim DeMint to Warren Tompkins, ‘Absolutely not, get out of this now, call it an April fools joke I don’t care but you do not work for me if you run for SCGOP chair’

If Tompkins is in…..and somehow wins, then I am done as a Republican in SC. This would be disasterous! What a damn joke.

This must be an April fools joke for the sake of conservatives in South Carolina. I have worked around Mr. Tompkins and have first hand experience on his “sell outs.”

I’m moving back to Washington……

Warren Tompkins sure has a lot of people running scared. I see this nothing more than a lot of jealous people making remarks on a person they don’t even know. Katon, you and your pathetic posse need to get a life.

I would vote for him over Rick Beltram.

Since Mr. Hall is no longer going to continue his bid for chairman, I wondering what is going to happen to his operation? It seems as if Senators Graham and DeMint were really over eager to get involved all for naught. I don’t see why Tompkins would not be their pick.

How about we start up a “Draft Glenn McCall” campaign???

By Yeah on April 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 am

Yeah, Glenn McCall. Great idea. Then we can have a guy without a job head our party. The guy got laid off by the big bank he was working at in Charlotte. Wonder if he is getting unemployment benefits? That must really hurt. Come on, Glenn. You don’t need no stinkin’ unemployment benefits. Bootstraps, baby, bootstraps!

I say the SCGOP needs a chair candidate who is not afraid to support Democrats from time to time–someone who is willing to give lots of money and vote for people like Bill Clinton, Inez Tenenbaum and Fritz Hollings. Oh wait, they have that candidate already and her name is Karen Floyd.
