MUSC Memo’s Mystery Author Revealed?
Multiple sources have told FITS that the anonymous author of a memo alleging widespread corruption at the Medical University of South Carolina is an award-winning forensic pathologist whose husband is the most powerful judge in South Carolina.
In other words, she’s not your typical government whistle-blower.
Originally written three years ago, the controversial memo was published for the first time yesterday on FITS.
It alleges illicit relationships, misuse of public funds, sexual harassment and numerous other indiscretions within the MUSC Pathology Department, which was the focus of an internal review at the time the memo was written.
So who authored the document that has spawned the school’s second major scandal in the last three months?
Our sources say the memo was written by Dr. Kimberly A. Collins, who was on the MUSC faculty from 1995-2008.
Collins is one of America’s most decorated forensic pathologists. In fact, she was recently awarded the 2008 Distinguished Patient Care Award from the field’s top professional association.
But as if her impeccable professional credentials weren’t enough, Collins has another strong card in her deck.
Her husband is U.S. District Court Judge David C. Norton, the Chief Judge for the District of South Carolina.
FITS was unsuccessful in contacting Collins, and it remains to be seen whether she will identify herself as the memo’s author or deny writing it.
One possible reason for Collins to remain silent (if she is, in fact, the author) would be the memo’s own admission that its author filed a conflicting report with the University, one that did not reveal this smorgasbord of indiscretions.
As noted in our previous report, sources tell FITS that other investigations into the memo’s accusations are “ongoing.”

I bet the “interviews” have begun. This should be fun, but like watching the opening of those big, stinky flowers.
