Bumped And Ground
Another Palmetto State basketball program, another late-season collapse.
As if the South Carolina Gamecocks’ horrific 1-4 conclusion to the 2008-09 season wasn’t bad enough, the Tigers one-upped them on the bummer-O-meter last night, falling 62-59 to the Michigan Wolverines in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Oh, and the “bummer-O-meter” is obviously not a real device … we just made it up for the purposes of this story.
Anyway, Clemson’s season collapsed with a 1-5 mark over its last six games, a hideous three-week stretch that was mercifully ended by a team that hasn’t been to the “Big Dance” in over a decade.
Once a national powerhouse, Michigan barely scraped its way into the tournament this year as a #10 seed.
But they showed they belonged, withstanding a furious Clemson rally to secure a first round win after the Tigers fell behind by fifteen points in the second half.
Clemson finished its season at 23-9, while South Carolina’s loss to Davidson earlier this year finished the Gamecocks out at 21-9.
In case you were wondering, President Barack Obama had the Tigers beating Michigan on his bracket, while Sic Willie took a chance on the Wolverines on his NCAA bracket.
We’ll be keeping you up to speed on how that little battle goes, but word is Obama is sweating Sic’s selection of Xavier as national champions.
Wait … what?
Why does everybody always make that face when we say “Xavier?”
