Knives Out For Tom Davis
Tom Davis did not approve this message. Nor does he have any idea we’re writing it.
But South Carolina’s top two political mafias want you to believe otherwise, and in hyper-hypocritical fashion they’re using their bought-and-paid-for political mouthpieces to try and paint us with that same brush.
Ordinarily, we would write it off as mere “blog envy,” but let’s be clear about one thing – Sic Willie isn’t the real target here.
Behind all of these not-so-subtle machinations is an underlying but potent fear that Davis – a freshman Senator from Beaufort, former Chief-of-Staff to Gov. Mark Sanford and longtime F.O.S. (Friend of Sic) – will run for governor in 2010, possibly with Sanford’s backing.
The initial hit on Davis came last week from The Palmetto Scoop, whose author is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the consulting firm employed by S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster – the 2010 gubernatorial frontrunner.
Here’s the Scoop’s pop (which turned out to be a recycling of previous accusations) … and here’s Sic Willie’s comeback.
But today’s pop comes from the latest online mouthpiece with ties to J. Warren Tompkins- the RINO consultant who is backing U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett’s gubernatorial candidacy.
That’s two of the state’s top three establishment empires slinging the same arrows at the same politician within the last week.
All that’s left is for Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s consultant, Rod Shealy, to take a swipe at Davis – although it remains to be seen whether that effort will involve planting another alleged illegal alien at Davis’ residence (a.k.a.The Honduran Part II).
Attacks about Davis’ relationship with Sic Willie are nothing new. They played a key role in his Senate race, despite the fact that voters roundly rejected them. Previous attempts to link candidates to Sic Willie – including radio ads run in 2006 by former State Treasurer Grady Patterson – have also failed to have any impact.
As for Davis, the S.C. Senate’s RINO Caucus already spent over $100,000 trying to defeat him, and his affiliation with Sanford makes him an easy target for attacks. He’s also angered many special interests in Columbia with his aggressive criticism of sacred cows like the S.C. State Ports Authority.
Stay tuned … we suspect this fight is just getting warmed up.

Any truth to the rumor that Davis, Rose and others are about to strip the bark off certain senior legislators for meddling in SPA affairs for their personal benefit? That’s sure to earn him even more haters. What happens when the haters reach a critical mass? Can he stand the heat?

I do not care about what Davis does, or does not do. But, you were really foolish in calling someone retarded in regard to the SEC, then turning around and expecting everyone to believe that you could provide a service to a candidate that would a) not have to be paid for or b) not have to be reported in some way. As usual, you just do not get it. And, that is a shame. By the way, if you know of one time I have actually seen Warren Tompkins in person, I would like to know.

Jesus, somebody put that Wolfe fellow in a 12-step comma program.
By Confused on March 18th, 2009 at 11:56 am
What is going on? Davis is just a freshman state senator. Sure, he was Sanford’s chief of staff, but there’s a hell of a long way from being a former chief of staff and a current freshman senator to running for governor. Has he ever even said he wants to run? It makes no sense. That said, Folks is right, Davis has been targeted recently by the mouthpieces for Gresham Barrett and Henry McMaster. Why?

Its thinking like yours that will drop the pants off OZ…!!! These CLOWNS are clueless….!!!

I’m confused? In what way exactly did Gresham do to take a shot at Senator Davis? As far as i know, the 2 have a good relationship.
By fitsnews on March 18th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Steve-
As far as we know, they do. That’s the sad thing. You get Barrett, Davis, McMaster, Bauer, Haley, Campsen and any of the other 2010 contenders in a room together and they’ll be all smiles and sunshine.
Particularly McMaster, who likely won’t have a clue where he is or why he’s there.
It’s their various political operatives who sow the discord, leaking this or that here and there trying to “send messages” and what not.
Barrett and Davis probably like each other just fine, really.

Philip, I rarely understand what you’re trying to say. And usually I don’t care. But this statement intrigues me: “Its (sic) thinking like yours that will drop the pants off OZ…!!! These CLOWNS are clueless….!!!”
What does that mean? Who is Oz? Who are the clowns? What are they clueless about?
Oh, and Mr. Wolfe? I agree with Punctuation that you overuse commas. It is annoying.)
And, I’m done. (See what I mean?)
By Bob Beardon on March 18th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Wolfe, it is refreshing to read someone who actually knows how to use a comma correctly.

Those painters at Davis’ crib weren’t illegals from Central America. They were illegals from Sanfrauds temp employment agency. There’s a difference. Hoy. So the GOP has spent 20 gazillion hours whining about BO’s 12 days in the senate as insufficient experience. So what’s Davis do…he follows BO’s lead with BO’s successful startegy of “get elected before ‘they’ learn just what a major asshole you really are”.

Can you explain to me a little bit better exactly how barrett cut tom davis then?
to say the wolfe report is gresham is the dumbest thing i’ve heard this week and wouldn’t typically expect to hear dumb stuff coming from your site.

Confused: the reason Davis is attractive is precisely because he’s a freshman legislator and not someone who has been in longer. Why would we want that? Let’s face it — all the high-profile politicians have pounded the public podium against “the system” and then shut the door and cut the deals. Unfortunate, but true. So far, Davis hasn’t done that. He seems to have policy knowledge beyond the usual consultant-penned press release, and he understands state government better than almost anyone who currently runs it. He would be a good governor, and that matters more than being an experienced self-promoter.

Well, all of you are going to be very surprised to know that by election time, 2010 — SC may be part of the EU!

Is this fellow Tom Davis any kin to Jefferson Davis?
By Thunder on March 20th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Tom Davis tells it like it is. I’m among those who urged him to run for his current office, and I’m honored to have him as my State Senator.
As for me, I’m supporting Gresham Barrett for our gubernatorial nomionation.
Tom’s time could well come in 2018.
