Louisiana State out-polled the University of South Carolina to win two key Southeastern Conference basketball awards yesterday, with first year Bayou Bengals coach Trent Johnson earning Coach of the Year honors and LSU guard Marcus Thornton winning Player of the Year.

First year USC head coach Darrin Horn and senior guard Devan Downey came up short in the voting by SEC coaches, although Downey was a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection.

Downey averaged 20.2 points and 4.6 assists per game this season, ranking third in the league in both categories.

He was also crazy consistent – with opponents’ holding him under 10 points just once all season.

Horn – who came to USC from Western Kentucky – put up a 21-8 season in his first year at the helm in Columbia, second only to Johnson’s 25-6 mark with LSU.

The Gamecocks won just 14 games in each of the previous two seasons.

And yes, here’s a closer look at that LSU girl’s body paint … everybody happy now?

Downey is a junior, not a senior. We get him back.

If I took a trip down to the Louisiana bayou, here’s what I’d do:

1. Kick David Vitter’s a$$ and find a conservative who is not a hypocrite to run for Senate in 2010.

2. Eat lots of gumbo and boudin.

3. Tear that LSU tittie-goddess ba-ronk-ka-ronk UP!
