Twittering In A Happy Place
We’ve tried several times now to ignore/ swear off Twitter, but for whatever reason our fearless leader (Nancy, not Sic) keeps making us go back.
And while we know a lot of S.C. politicos swear by it, the truth is Twitter does absolutely nothing for us.
It’s like a daily snapshot of America’s attention deficit disorder – an avalanche of “who cares” crammed into a bunch of 140-character crack rants.
Seriously, we’re supposed to convey something coherent in 140 characters or less? Including spaces?
Not gonna happen.
We can’t even talk dirty to all the hot lobbyists over at the State House in that amount of space.
Then there’s the whole “Tiny URL” thing … which just screams inadequacy, and compels us to remind people that their URL’s may be tiny, but Sic’s is large and in charge.
On top of that is Twitter’s annoying “@replies,” which we found out the hard way means that people are communicating with you directly – or trying to – but in a way that is somehow different from sending you “direct messages.”
Again … we don’t get it.
Of course Palmetto “reporters” like Wes Wolfe and Jason “T.” Spencer (hippie, above), practically live on the website, and both of them have “tweeted” us several times regarding our coverage … usually to say something annoying about it.
We know Wolfe fairly well, and although his website is clearly a tool of the legislative establishment we think he’s a decent enough guy.
But Spencer?
We’ve never heard of him until now.
Although we must say from his Twitter picture he appears to be in a happy place – perhaps with some mushrooms growing nearby?
As Sic likes to say, “have a nice day, rosy cheeks …”
Update – So, you all tell us who this Spencer cat is … is he a decent reporter in the Bob Dalton mold? Or a bleeding heart liberal goober like Baker Maultsby, destined to wax annoying on websites like this one forever and ever?

Ha…I am sure people have called me a tool before, but it was always behind my back (jokes). By the way, it is 140 characters. But, like I said in another post on my site, like any tech, you have to know how to use it. If you know, it is a great resource. If not, it is easy enough to sit with Brad Warthen in a rocking chair at the Home and joke about the kids and the crazy things they are doing these days.
Got to go, though. Lots of toolishness to get to this fine evening.

Such a grumpy old man…I’ll get you one way or the other to love Twitter. Really really love it.

I was arrested for twittering on a park bench.

I (heart) Jason, Bob and Baker but not Twitter. I guess I’m just old.

When I first saw the picture, I thought you were doing a piece on HBO’s hilarious new comedy series, East Bound and Down.

Spencer is probably a fine reporter, but he has a problem with sourcing. It’s usually better to call the subject of a story for input BEFORE the story runs. Surely, this must still be taught in J-school.

Jason Spencer has always seemed to me a dedicated, even-handed and very much in-touch reporter. He is neither a gadfly or scurrilous muckraker.
Don’t resort to mocking one of the state’s hardest-working journalists just because he’s active in a network. As Twitter gains traction, it’s an invaluable tool for him because it draws attention to his reporting and topics in Spartanburg county.
In regard to his “annoying” use of @replies…The only one I saw was to question your leads on the Katon/SLED story. He’s using Twitter to save time by not having to investigate your nonsense. As opposed to you, he seems to have a pretty favorable reputation among S.C. press hacks.
Cracking wise by using a picture of him to paint him as a ‘hippie’ is tantamount to using your mug shot and calling you a balding wife-beater. (Read: Therefore disreputable and loopy) It shows a complete lack of creativity, objectivity and research.

Yeah, we’re just not blessed with your rhetorical flourish and knack for humor. Too busy being bitter about being ignored up here. (Oh noes. :X)

Will — Just here to try and keep you a little bit honest. I suppose that gets under your skin (but to think what a swell guy you used to be, Will…makes me sad we can’t have legitimate disagreements without your becoming ugly about things).
Bob Dalton is, as you say, a fine reporter and a good dude. I doubt he buys your right-wing PPIC non-sense, either. But he is a great guy.
