Hollywood’s War Back On Front Burner
Amazingly, actor George Clooney wasn’t auditioning for a role as White House Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emanuel when he visited the White House last night for a sit-down with President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden.
He was, however, advising the President and Vice-President on foreign policy, which we’re sure will produce nothing but sustained awesomeness.
Specifically, Clooney met with Obama and Biden to discuss Hollywood’s War against the War in Darfur, which let’s face it – hasn’t been on anybody’s radar other than Clooney’s for a long time.
From the AP:
Clooney, a U.N. Messenger of Peace, said he asked the president to appoint a full-time regional envoy who reports directly to the White House, and to ask China to set aside its business interests in the region and pressure Sudan to prevent atrocities.
The refugees need “what we do best, what we have done best since the start of this country—which is good, robust diplomacy all across the world,” he said.
Clooney said he delivered 250,000 postcards gathered by the Save Darfur organization to the president and Vice President Joe Biden. The actor said both were receptive.
Well that’s just great.
Why stop with an envoy, though? Isn’t there some bailout money we can send these poor people?
Of course the sad thing is that dropping a billion on Darfur would probably be a better investment than dumping it into a bunch of unsustainable government entitlement programs.
Which reminds us, with America careening headlong toward socialism, can we really still say we’re “spreading freedom and democracy around the world?”
It seems a bit hypocritical, doesn’t it?
