Aren’t they pretty?

Those are four brand new super post-Panamax cranes being delivered this week to the Georgia Ports Authority, which is going to need them given the amount of business Savannah is taking away from Charleston, S.C.

From the Savannah Morning News:

The cranes, expected to be operational by mid-summer, are part of the port’s long-term strategic growth plan – a plan that will double current capacity to 6.5 million 20-foot containers by 2018.

In the meantime, the S.C. State Ports Authority’s strategic plan is to sit around with a not-so-bright look on its face.

will,

seriously, what is the solution? any links to previous posts?

The solution is simple: Appoint a true ports CEO who is accountable to someone EVERYBODY elects, not a political board. Then empower that CEO to enter into public-private parterships that cede operational control of the facilities in exchange for $$$. State retains ownership of land/ infrastructure, they just let people who know how to make money run the show.

The good folks over in Jasper county have been trying for years to build an operational port. Their enemies aren’t across the river in Georgia. Their real enemies and the roadblock to their port are certain parties in Columbia.

Oh come on Willie- let’s look at some facts.

The Port of Charleston bought these type of cranes in 2003 for their Columbus Street terminal to the tune of 6 million smackers a pop.

I bet you a cold soda pop the SPA has NEVER used them on a big ship at the Columbus Street terminal- call up the SPA and ask them how many times they have had use for these post-panamax cranes at Columbus Street and ask them to give you the vessel names ?

Check it out on the link below – we dredged deeper than Savannah and we got the big cranes first too- but we just forgot to bring in the business.
