Actually, Consistent, no one is giving a "new" responsibility to government. All expenditures are by law public information, and it is part of the duty of government employees to make it available. Requiring online check registers would not "grow" government at all. Most banks do it for free. But even if there is a cost to posting the information online -- which they have done at zero cost in lots of other states -- it is minor compared to what it supposedly costs to make photocopies. Technology makes it easy and inexpensive for the public to see where their money is going. There is no good reason to oppose this bill, and the only people who do are politicians and lobbyists.

While these fiscal conservative reformers criticize those who would want to grow government (I am all for that)……at the same time they want to actually “increase” government by giving another responsibility to the Comptroller General’s Office, and to the local municipalities, school districts, etc. You can’t say government hands off in one area and be allowed to intervene in another. That’s not consistent. And then there is the whole arguement of “There Ain’t No Such Thing as a Free Lunch.”
