Think of the ramifications: Without Maine, what would happened to the US clipper ship industry? Who would provide the lobsters to keep the tanks stocked at grocery stores and restaurants? And wherever could we find enough individuals to man our nation's lighthouses? And, besides, Maine has long served as an effective buffer between the rest of our nation and those devilish New Brunswickers, who've never forgiven the US for the shellacking we gave their British brethren in the War of 1812.
