Steele Elected Republican Party Chairman

It took six ballots, but former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele is the new chairman of the Republican National Committee, the first African-American to hold the position.

Steele defeated South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson, who was dogged throughout the campaign by his affiliation with at least two “whites only” social organizations.

Of course Steele has plenty of baggage himself, having essentially run the Republicans’ top political action committee into the ground in recent years.

Anyway, it appeared earlier in the day that Dawson might win the race after former RNC Chairman Mike Duncan dropped out after the third ballot, but a late endorsement from former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell (another black RNC candidate) helped propel Steele to victory on the sixth and final ballot – some five hours after voting began.

The final tally was 91 votes for Steele, 77 for Dawson.

Of course, what’s truly amazing isn’t that Steele emerged victorious, it’s that a 1990-era hack like Dawson actually received almost half the votes.

Now the fallout turns to Dawson’s home state, where he faces a party in chaos and an uncertain future as its leader.

After all, it was one of Dawson’s Palmetto State rivals, “GOP” consultant Warren Tompkins, who allegedly leaked the “whites only” story to the mainstream media last fall after getting cut out of the party’s war chest.

Rest assured, if Dawson runs for State Party Chairman again he will face formidable opposition from the Tompkins machine, which has a history of exacting multiple pounds of flesh from its political rivals.

Updated – Less than a minute after the voting ended, Steele’s Wikipedia Page shows him as Chairman. Damn, Wikipedia is fast!

Goodbye, Katon. Wasn’t his year.

Poor, poor Katon. Guess he didn’t pray long or hard enough…

what ever happened to Luke Byers?

Katon is a great guy. I wish he had won. He did a lot for our party after the mess he inherited. He is a guy who fixes problems. Hopefully, Steele will fix the problem in our party.

Funny that after the Democrates won the White House with an African American that the RNC (established in 1856) finally decided to select an African American for its top national committee office. Interesting?

Katon can come home and fix all the problems here in the state. There are gonna be some problems folks.

By Don on January 30th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Katon is an idiot. Luke Byers is even dumber.

By Chip on January 30th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

So how much did Katon’s campaign cost the GOP party of SC???

By James the Foot Soldier on January 30th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

I for one LOVE the irony that Katon “whites only country clubber” Dawson got clubbed by Stelle.

sic(k) willie, quit avoiding the issue. Give us details about the SLED beat down squad you claim. Facts, names and details. We wait, sic(k) one.

What everyone wants is detail on the SLED beat down squad.

Katon should now have time to count all those guns he owns…

By Todd on January 30th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Katon made a great showing and represented us well. Just get over it. He loves South Carolina and our people first and that may have been his downfall. I don’t fault him for that.

I have a crazy feeling the SLED beatdown story will disappear until Folks gets paid again to attack Katon

Thank goodness the RNC dodged the Dawson bullet. Now if he would only leave us alone to rebuild in a respectable way on the homefront. With new leadership like Gresham Barrett, Trey Gowdy, and Nikki Haley, I think we might could actually pull this thing back together.

I’m just grateful that any sleazy neo-con buddy of neo-con traitor Lindsey Graham did not win! Until the Repubs dump the fascist neo-con agenda and get back to supporting the U.S. Constitution, they deserve every bad thing that happens to them. I’ll be drinking a beer this evening in celebration of Dawson’s humiliation.

Thank God that useless excuse for a haircut to get around town didn’t win and put South Carolina into national disrepute by marking time at the national level like he’s done in the Palmetto State. I would say good riddance, but we all know today is the first day of Dawson’s next campaign for, whatever it is he thinks he has a shot at. See, that’s what vacant political shape-shifters do.

VERY well, stated, Mr. Wiley!

For clarification, the comment by “Lou” in post 6 above is not Lou Nolan, Chairman of the Richland County Republican Party.
