UPDATED – Down To The Snout
Petty, acrimonious and utterly devoid of substance, the race for Republican National Committee Chairman is headed toward its sixth ballot, with SCGOP chairman Katon Dawson now trailing former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele by 10 votes.
After receiving the endorsement of former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, the fifth vote tally taken only a moment ago showed Steele with 79 votes, Dawson with 69 votes and Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis with 20 votes.
Eight-five votes are required to win election as the party’s next chairman.
Current GOP chairman Mike Duncan dropped out after the third ballot when it was clear he wasn’t going to reach that threshold, with most of his votes going to Dawson.
Now more than ever, it would appear that Anuzis will play the kingmaker.
UPDATE – Anuzis just dropped out, deciding not to endorse either candidate.

I really hope Steele wins – I know all my fellow SCGOP politicos want Dawson to win. But isn’t it ironic that a party that has a problem (esp. after the last election) with being seen as a party of white men with only Southern regional appeal might elect as its first post-2008 chairman a white guy from the Deep South who is preceived to have a race problem? Maybe it’s not fair to Mr. Dawson’s character, but from a PR standpoint you just don’t want your new Republican chairman having to defend a white country club membership as his first act in the national media.
