Somebody should tell Mark McGwire’s brother that if you’re going to try and publish a tell-all book throwing one of your family members under the bus, you should probably have something to “tell.”
Preferably something no one has heard before.
Yet Jay McGwire’s proposed book – “The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption” – doesn’t do that, which is probably one reason it’s a “proposed” book instead of one you can pick up at Barnes & Noble.
Simply put, we’ve read about Mark McGwire’s steriod use … err, sorry, “alleged” steroid use … in a much less pretentious-sounding book called “Juiced” by former McGwire teammate Jose Canseco.
And that book talked about men sticking needles in other mens’ buttocks.
Yet Jay McGwire believes he is on a sacred mission to save his brother’s soul.
“Mark is a man I think most would like to forgive because his reason wasn’t nefarious — it was for survival,” he writes in a copy of the book proposal, which Deadspin.com says has been rejected by several publishers. “My bringing the truth to surface about Mark is out of love. I want Mark to live in truth to see the light, to come to repentance so he can live in freedom – which is the only way to live.”
Egad, Jay McGwire. Egad.
