I endorsed Grant for president in 1868, attended his inauguration ceremonies, and was appointed surveyor of customs in New Orleans. Later, the Republican governor of Louisiana appointed me adjutant general of the state militia and by 1872 I became a major general in command of all militia and state police forces within New Orleans. And I proudly used African-American troops during that stint!

Some of you in the Present still revile me as a “reconstructed rebel” because I embraced equal rights for blacks, unification of the nation, and reconstruction. To them I say this: I have long since become accustomed to being the target of those who wanted to maintain racist policies and otherwise could not accept the verdict of the battlefield.

And Gettysburg was not my fault! Damnable lies continue to besmirch my name. Jubal Early, goddamme his soul, condemned me in a speech at Washington College, exonerating Lee of his failure at Gettysburg and falsely accusing me of attacking late on the second day and of being responsible for the debacle on the third. That cowardly piece of offal! He should have taken Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Hill on the first day.

No one in the Present can match me in courage. Read the “Killer Angels” if you want to know what really happened at Gettysburg. The only thing I lacked was a PR person of Sic Willie’s caliber. If I had had him at my side, my name would now be revered in the South.

All he, and other “Republicans” care about is getting close to the taxpayer money spigot somehow someway . They mainly work at inventing new empty slogans and sayings to repeat to us over and over .
