UPDATED – Groseclose Resigns As SC Ports Authority President

Go ahead and chalk another one up for our amazing network of reliable sources.

Seriously, people, with informants like the ones we have, staying ahead of S.C. political news is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Anyway, just as we predicted in our post last week, S.C. State Ports Authority President Bernard Groseclose is out of a job today, according to a press release we just received from the agency.

Current Board of Directors Secretary John Hassell will serve as the interim president until a permanent replacement can be appointed by him and his fellow members.

“The people of South Carolina owe Bernie Groseclose a debt of gratitude for his service to one of our state’s most important economic development engines,” said SPA Chairman David J. Posek. “During his tenure, the port system became one of the most effective and efficient ports authorities in the world. He has led the Authority through some very turbulent times over the years and the board wishes him the best. I am sure he will succeed in his future endeavors.”

Really?

We’re guessing that’s just nice stuff that people feel compelled to say when somebody gets forced out of their job after years of gross incompetence – which, of course, was capped off by the loss of the port’s biggest client.

The truth is that under Bernard Groseclose’s “leadership,” the Port of Charleston’s competitive position has plummeted in recent years, a trend that is expected to continue when the latest container traffic rankings are released toward the end of this month.

South Carolina has also been outflanked by numerous competitors, who have leveraged billions of dollars in private investment to build gleaming new terminals that have created thousands of high-paying jobs.

In fact, only when the Ports Authority was effectively shoved to the sidelines kicking and screaming did our state successfully negotiate a deal with Georgia to construct a new container terminal in Jasper County, one of the most economically-depressed areas of our state.

According to the architect of that deal, S.C. Senator Tom Davis, Groseclose’s departure creates a “critical juncture” at which South Carolina will either “change or continue to watch the world pass us by.”

“We have been warned repeatedly in the past about the dangers of our outdated ‘total state control’ model of port management, and now it’s time to bring that model into the free market economy, as well as the 21st Century,” Davis said. “In leading our state’s negotiations with Georgia to build a bi-state port facility in Jasper County, I saw firsthand the importance of leveraging private capital to expand infrastructure. That’s common sense in any economic climate, but it’s especially critical given the current revenue situation we’re facing.”

Indeed, South Carolina recently shelled out $167 million for a port access road aimed at expanding capacity in Charleston, money it won’t have to play with this year or next year, in all likelihood.

sic(k) willie brags about his “amazing network of reliable sources.” Poop.

Like the amazing source that led him to the Midlands’ official he claims has a Strom problem? Or his reliable source that led him to claim the gub’ner paid off the family of “some poor little black girl” in Beaufort?

Oddly, our staff is alone in standing firm in our demand that sic(k) willie make good on his promises to provide details on those claims.

At least in this case willie admits his source is a publicly available news release. As far as his, so called, “prediction” last week, anyone can make a guess based on current events. Sometimes a guess gets lucky.

You know. Like when willie drives down the street and sees a traffic light turn yellow. He turns to Mrs. sic and says, “Honey Bunny, I predict that light will soon turn red.” Amazing predictions from sic(k) willie.

Hey Bin, While you’re at it lets not forget the $700 million school district slush fund money he uncovered last week. Hmm…you you must have too busy working on your website that doesn’t exist to bother posting then. Hope you enjoy poaching traffic here in the meantime. You’re always worth a laugh at your expense.

BIN — I suggest you, Sic Willie, and a witness all go out for ice cream. Let Sic Willie predict what flavor you will order. That would be fun to hear about, in every last detail.

Don’t you agree, BIN?

Next up…steve connor for his gross incompetence at the port? The whole third floor is a cancer eating away the jobs in south carolina and embarrasing the city of charleston with that disgusting cruise ship operation.

Bring in some fresh talent.

Hmm……..

Norfolk-Southern and CSX still win either way……

I guess the financial Analysts for these companies told Mayor Riley, Summey and the ILA to …SHOVE IT !!! NO WONDER Mayor Riley was begging for bailout LOOT for the 175 Million worth of track from Charleston to Summerville….

Thats TRACKs of GOLD !!!!

I guess that also means that the permit for the EXPANSION of Kinder-Morgan was a “grab your ankles” MOVE !!!!!

Hmmm……”Weekend at Bernie’s” for all the ILA ….WIVES !!!!!

Let Groseclose be just the beginning of the necessary housecleaning.

The SPA’s public relations department needs to be revamped to strive for honesty and openness to the general public.

Groseclose claimed the port of Charleston was running out of room for a decade. Now he leaves with our existing 3 terminals operating at less than 50% capacity, prior to Maersk pulling up anchor.

He leaves us with a boondoggle project at the navy base that is incapable of loading double stacked intermodal trains -a necessity in today’s container market.

Let’s hope they bring in some real talent that can privatize our existing terminals and not be a cash drain for state taxpayers.

Hmm………..

Once BMW moves their operation to the JASPER Port……does that mean that Mayor Riley can have a PRESSer on the Yorktown ….with a banner also stating….”MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” !!!

MY BACKSIDE…….!!!!!

Dear Fascisthizzile, sic(k) willie’s reserve fund story was just another willie scam. There was no news in it. Either you missed our earlier very enlightened posts on the topic, or (more likely) you just pretend you did not read them.

Mab, Would you serve as waitstaff for us? We will give you a tip. Our best bet is that you have experience waiting tables.

By Mab on January 21st, 2009 at 8:44 am

I have never waited tables, BIN. But I did get arrested once for kicking a waitress in the crotch. Does that count?

By Gen. Longstreet on January 21st, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I have a port story, of sorts. I remember back in 1863 when some high school dropout brats (with more than a whiff of Downs, if you get my drift) built a metal underwater boat (a “submarine” they called it) and launched it into the Charleston harbor. Damn fools. The blame thing sank like a stone, of course, and that all drowned. Now I read where millions of dollars have been spent by the state to “restore” the thing and that some want to put it on display in North Charleston. Haw! You in the Present have strange ways.

General Longstreet,

Damn you, sir! If we were not long dead I would demand satisfaction on the field of honor for your insult on our heroes on the Hunley.

How dare you, sir, insult real heroes of “The Cause” with your petty political cr@p. And with such poor command of the English language and bad grammar.

You were late at Gettysburg, and your soldiers called you “Peter the Slow” for your lack of initiative later in the war. After the War, sir, you were worse than a carpet-bugger. You were a republicrat scalawag carpet-bugger.

No wonder you now serve as a mouthpiece for modern day carpet-buggers.

And after the War, sir, you became Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Not to mention, you were responsible for the massacre of surrendered African Americans at Pillow.
