Former Tennessee running back Jay Graham has been hired to coach his old position under Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina – the latest turn of the Shamecocks’ off-season coaching carousel.
Graham’s hiring means Spurrier’s offense will start next season with a new line coach, running backs coach and quarterbacks coach, although it remains to be seen whether not any of these changes will improve the performance of a unit that has straight up fallen off a cliff over the last two seasons.
South Carolina ranked 112th out of 119 Division I-A teams in rushing the football last season, with only 94.1 yards a game.
That means Graham will have his work cut out for him … so much so that the Gamecocks might be better off if he suited up and played the position himself.
A six-year NFL veteran, Graham racked up over 2,600 yards at Tennessee to rank sixth on the school’s all-time list.
He comes to South Carolina from Miami of Ohio, and replaces former Florida running back Robert Gillespie, who heads to Oklahoma State.
