RIP, Corinthian Leather

We have no idea what heaven will be like, but our guess is that it will be luxuriously appointed with lots and lots of soft, Corinthian leather.

Which would make it not unlike the optional interior of the 1975 Chrysler Cordoba, which was so exquisitely pimped by Ricardo Montelban, who died yesterday at the age of 88 at his home in Los Angeles.

Seriously, people, Patrick McGoohan and Ricardo Montelban in the same week?

Who’s next?

Anyway, in case you’ve never been exposed to the luxury of soft, Corinthian leather (which was later discovered to be regular leather with a little Madison Avenue spit shine), here you go:

Montelban, who is perhaps most famous for his role as Mr. Roarke on Fantasy Island, has also staked his claim as one of the greatest sci-fi villains in cinematic history.

Seriously, people,The Wrath of Khan, in which Montelban played the title character, remains the gold standard of the Star Trek franchise.

As a former Volare driver circa 1986, let me state for the record that “rich Corinthian leather” would burn your ass during a hot Columbia summer. And I don’t know about spit shine, but spilled beer burnished it up nicely.

Now THAT’S a friggin’ car – the lines and grill and all that hot U.S.A. steel – the freakin’ hood weighs more than most panty-waist cars on the road today – my apologies to all you accord/camry/saturn drivers – I refuse to buy a car in the shape of a jelly bean.
