Quarterback Chris Smelley is leaving the University of South Carolina to play baseball at another school, most likely the University of Alabama.

Smelley – who went 9-6 as a starter in two seasons at South Carolina – made the announcement yesterday via the University’s website.

“It’s been a difficult decision – something I’ve been thinking and praying about for a while. I’m leaving South Carolina with a lot of memories and great relationships that will last a lifetime. I’m very thankful to the university and to Coach Spurrier for the opportunity to play football for the Gamecocks and wish my teammates the very best,” his statement reads.

Smelley threw for 1,922 yards with 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2008, his sophomore year, including an award-winning performance against Ole Miss midway through the season.

He was never consistent, though, and did not adjust well when USC head coach Steve Spurrier began rotating in redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia at quarterback.

Now, the keys to Spurrier’s offense – such as it is – are in the hands of Garcia, who has yet to show that he has the discipline to translate his prodigious natural talent into success on the gridiron.

Tainted by several off-field incidents, questionable work ethic and spotty play (including a horrific showing in the 2009 Outback Bowl), there’s no indication that Garcia can elevate South Carolina from its historic mediocrity anytime soon.

“They’ve laid this program out at his feet,” said once source we spoke with. “He simply refuses to take it.”

To bad. His name was the perfect adjective for USC’s season. As Ms. Corningstone might say, “It smells like a used diaper filled with Indian food.”
