Florida Is … Wait A Minute

Hey Sam Bradford … they play defense in the SEC.

After sitting back and unloading on a bunch of high school defenses all year, Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy quarterback got chomped up and spit out by a Southeastern Conference defense in last night’s National Championship Game – which ended up being a thoroughly over-sponsored, over-hyped, poorly-played affair that did nothing to resolve a very fundamental question …

Who deserves the national championship?

Florida will take home the Bowl Championship Series trophy, of course, its second BCS crown in three years and the SEC’s third crystal football in a row.

And let’s face it, they’re probably the best football team in the nation … but it’s that nagging “probably” again. It’s that nagging “probably” every year with this stupid BullChampionShit.

What about 13-0 Utah? Or 12-1 Southern Cal? Or 12-1 Texas?

After all, Utah beat Alabama worse than Florida did. Southern Cal manhandled Penn State. Texas? They beat Ohio State and the Stairway to Heaven curse – in the same game.

So who’s the best? And why is a formula that was supposed to answer that question every year failing to provide resolution in any year?

There’s no debate as to who the NFL champion is … it’s whoever wins the playoffs. The Stanley Cup? It goes to whoever wins the Stanley Cup playoffs. Worlds Series champs? That’s the winner of the MLB playoffs. NCAA Division I-AA? Divison II? Division III? Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs.

Catching a trend? We’re using a device called repetition. And using it effectively, we might add.

Division I-A football is the only NCAA-sponsored sport without an organized tournament to determine its champion, people. Which is insane.

Seriously, why can’t we lace ‘em up for three more games (i.e. two more weekends)?

Pit Texas against Cal and Utah against Florida and then see what happens …

We still think Florida and its Superman would come out on top, but until you play ‘em off you just never know.

“Let someone else worry about that,” Meyer said of the controversy after the game. “The Gators are No. 1!”

We agree, but until the NCAA takes its head out of its ass and implements a D-1 playoff, we’ll never know for sure.

Update – Well, the AP final poll has Florida overwhelmingly No. 1 … but still.

Sic, don’t drink the Utah KoolAde. Sure they beat Alabama, but the Tide, with their Threename QB played over their heads all year. Watching Utah play had me yearning for the days of He Hate Me, foot races instead of coin tosses and Vince McMahon getting body slammed in an owner’s suite. That game had me washing my eyes out with Lava soap for days.
If the Utes wish to become “bona fide” then they should take those 5 or 6 non conference games and fill them with Fla, LSU, USC (west coast version), Ohio State, and Texas. Then when they finish the season 5-7 they will quietly go away. Or they could just learn to play the banjo and buy some Pomade.
btw is it just me but everytime I hear the word Utes, I think of “My Cousin Vinny”.
