Kelly Payne Is “Just Because …”

So who is Kelly Payne? And how did she suddenly become such a S.C. political rock star? Well, other than the fact that our founding editor is obviously “hot for teacher …”

The evolution of Payne from award-winning public school teacher to a political juggernaut is fairly easy to track, beginning with her involvement in a teenage drivers’ awareness program that put her in frequent contact with State House movers and shakers.

From there, she’s extended invitations to dozens of famous S.C. politicos to come and speak to her class at Dutch Fork High School, one of only two S.C. high schools to be ranked among the Top 350 in the nation.

Among those famous politicos to accept? This sexy beast. Oh and several constitutional officers, State Senators and Representatives, as well.

In addition to teaching, though, Payne is speaking her mind – which as we all know is dangerous.

We featured an op-ed from Payne on the issue of government transparency a few days ago, and the response was overwhelming – although it did prompt some folks to attack her for allegedly bringing a “political agenda” into her classroom and exposing her students to a “porn site,” i.e. the site you are currently reading right now.

All of this ignores the following: Payne doesn’t encourage or discourage any political position in her class, she invites diametrically-opposed politicians (unless you think Sen. Jake Knotts and Rep. Nikki Haley are cut from the same cloth) and she filters all material her students read for any inappropriate content.

Again, we know because we’ve been there.

And just out of curiosity, where’s this same outrage when school officials blast out e-mails on the taxpayer dime trying to directly influence the outcome of an election – in direct violation of state law?

Yeah … apparently only one form of “speaking your mind” is encouraged in our public schools, which is to say you’ve got to speak the establishment’s mind.

Anyway, in a state where teachers are encouraged to get involved in politics, Payne has done that and then some, and yesterday she kicked it up another notch by going head-to-head on the Keven Cohen radio show with S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell.

We haven’t heard the tale of the tape yet, but we heard from several loyal readers that she more than held her own against the arch-defender of our state’s failed status quo.

Our only question for Kelly is this … when will she run for office herself?

Actually, on second thought, people who make as much sense as she does wouldn’t “get anything done,” would they?

They wouldn’t “get along” or “work well with others” or “play nice in the sandbox” or any of the other ridiculous phrases our legislative leaders throw out with whenever somebody starts making sense.

Props to Kelly Payne … and please don’t stop making sense, girlfriend.

This state needs more people like you … and less people like those (including Speaker Harrell) who are giving you grief.

Yes, the cantaloupes are sweet. More importantly is the mind that is in charge of the cantaloupes. She has got the brains to match the beauty. She is the real deal, and has the connections to make things happen. Too bad that she is in South Carolina, a state that is mired in 1861 politics. Creative thinking and fiscal responsibility seem to be the province of the Yankees and therefore have been banished. I’m glad that FITS is able to recognize talent and make it known to others. And I have it on good authority that Mrs. FITS approves of Ms. Payne also. With Providence, Good Luck and FITS, (maybe a supportive and encouraging boyfriend??) perhaps Ms. Payne can accomplish something of which South Carolina can be proud.

I meant to come to see you today to ask how the call went yesterday, but as I can see you “held your own” and I cannot wait to hear how it went in more detail.
I can’t say I’m surprised though. Everyone in your classes knows how passionate you are about the current news and local to nation-wide politics and we all knew that you would use the opportunity to get your voice out there in a way that makes a difference.

Oh, Sic you are simply the best when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Yes! Ms. Payne is the greatest teacher ever!!!!!
If people want to talk about the way she looks, fine, they obvisiously have nothing better to do with their life, beside sit at their computer and waist their life away making bad comments on her apperance.

    anyway…

For all the people that don’t know who she is, I’ll tell you!

She is a history teacher at Dutch Fork High School who is also the advisor for the Interact Club! (Which I am president of) Interact Club is her pride and joy! This is one of the only clubs at the school that have community service projects! (something we ALL need) Interact has also piolited Alive @ 25, which is the teen driving awarness program Sic mentioned above.
We also do the Homeworks project which is my favorite community service by far. In the Homeworks project, we go to an older relative in the area, who has a house that is in bad shape, and we fix it up! The look on their faces is such a relief to this harsh world. Interact has a variety of students that want to work together to come up with a way to give back to the community.
Along with the numerous projects Interact Club does, last year I was in her current issues class, we disscussed politics, current world events, and we could DEBATE about any topic, which was what I liked the most! She has so many connections, its unbelievable! Which is great because that makes our education unlimited (which is what we all need, HELLO, we are in SC).
If we are talking about a topic that involves Sic Willie (haha), then she asks him if he can come in, and he does (Thanks Sic!). Another guest that came to her class was WIS anchor Dawndy Mercer(now Dawndy Plank)!
It was so cool to see her there! I want to be an anchor for WIS
You see! Ms. Payne is a great, great, great teacher!!!!
We can’t help if she is hurting on the attractive side!

Ms. Payne had a heart attack when she found her name on the front page of fitsnews. Her first immediate comment was, “Thats it i’m fired”. I had Ms. Payne this year and i had her last year, and by far, she’s my favorite teacher. I mentioned to her last year that she should run for president, but she insisted on senator. Now i’ve changed my mind, she should be the new speaker of the house. Ms. Payne is the most involved teacher at our school. Last year she gave out countless opportunities to help out with the running candidates in the primaries in such. But, i’ll be the first to back her up, shes never forced any political party down our throats. PS: Ms. Payne i know your up at 3am reading this because you have no papers to grade. After all, she is a civics and history teacher. Since she is a civics and history teacher who is passionate about reaching out to our future leaders and giving them a sense of history so that they are not condemed to repeat it. A lesson that she should take downtown since the legislature seems to be repeating the history of fiscal irresponsibility that has led to across the board budget cuts.

I have attended Dutch Fork for four years, aka I am currently a senior there now. I first had Mrs. Payne my freshman year, and I have grown close to her throughout the rest of my journey through Dutch Fork. In 2006, Megan Preston, an upcoming graduating senior of Dutch Fork Class of ’07 was killed by a train in early October of 2006. This was a tragedy to the entire school, myself as well, being Megan was one of my good friends and that fact that our families were really close. Instead of, like every other teacher, just consoling us students through this shock, Mrs. Payne actually took action. Thanks to her we now have a school wide Alive at 25 program to teach young and new drivers safe driving skills. It is required to receive a parking pass for the school’s student parking lot, and has helped improve the ignorance of most teenage drivers. I don’t know any other teacher who would go out of their way and consume the rest of their free time outside of their career for students they hardly now, but Mrs. Payne does it everyday.
This year, my senior year, I was elected for homecoming court by the club run by Mrs. Payne, Interact. I had the honor of wearing Megan’s dress to the event. This year, thanks to Mrs. Payne’s enthusiastic encouragement, I am spearheading a Make-A-Wish program at Dutch Fork, which will raise money for all of the Special Ed students here. So far we have raised over $500.

And one last thing I would like to say, I am only seventeen years old and just posted a blog that did not bash anyone based on their clothing, size of “cantalopes” or anything else crude, colorful, and immature. If a grown adult has to resort to insults to make a point about an issue, the message is being sent across that they have no viable point to make in the first place. In a nutshell I am saying, GROW UP!

    Thank you,
    Amber

My name is Ebony, and I am a DAY away from graduating from Dutch Fork High School. Mrs. Payne has done countless things for me, picked me up for meetings, driven me to anything I have ever asked, and basically done anything for me. But, my point is, just as she wrote in her op-ed, the squabbling in the House is setting a bad example for young adults. I also think the derogatory comments being made about Mrs. Payne’s appearance are not setting a very good example for us either. Young people look up to successful adults and the example being made by the House is far from the right one. I am an African American, but call Mrs. Payne “mom”. She never discriminates because of a person’s appearance, and would never stoop low enough to attack people who disagree with her using appearance or personal issues. Are the insults directed towards her accomplishments in the community, or is this a personal vendetta against a person that supports recorded voting?? This has given me a real wake up call to the inside of real dirty politicking and mudslinging that we read about at school in our government issued textbooks. I’m glad I’m going into nursing and not politics, political consulting, or lobbying. One thing Mrs. Payne did teach me was that our Bill of Rights was heavily influenced by Voltaire, who said, “I may not like what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it.” That is the only excuse you get BIN News for being so ignorant. BTW, someone else once said, “Ignorance is curable, but stupidity is permanent.”

  44. By Asheton Richardson January 8, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Have you ever heard the phrase you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Obviously the House believes they are above this little phrase. Recorded voting is how things should be handled. The presidential candidates admit to their views on issues, why can’t you? Oh, I know why, because it will jeopardize your chances of being re-elected. You got in the House based on things you support and things you weren’t afraid of us knowing you supported, but now that you are in the House your all of a sudden against coming clean to your little yes or no. Understandable, considering you most likely just scribbled down a halfway thought-through answer to save your precious time. Well, to be honest that excuse is a bunch of BS because the issues SHOULD be considered, and the House SHOULD be spending time on them. What great morals the House is teaching society’s children today. Hey, you can think this about something and not have to tell anyone what you think because no one will ever know. Wow, great morals there: don’t stand up for what you believe in kids. If the House is too scared for the public to know what their opinion is on every issue, then that doesn’t give me much confidence. I think the members of the House should be more than willing to share what they think and have EVERYTHING recorded not just the costly stuff. In the end it’s not about money anyways, or is it? Ponder on that one for a bit.

I once read this quote, it reads, “Everyone says it, but no one does it.” This quote holds true for the House not wanting recorded voting. That way they can go on pleasing everyone and not have to worry about re-election. Well, newsflash House, you CAN’T please everyone. It is utterly impossible, so stop trying. If you want to be re-elected based on issues that you may not have even agreed upon, and have people vote for you who you may not even agree with you, go right ahead, at least your still getting money. Oh, my bad I forgot it’s not all about the money. So, keep on making crude and vulgar comments about Mrs. Payne, at least her STUDENTS, a.k.a., young adults, can stick to the issues. Who would’ve thought it would end up being a group of students who brings this issue out. Life is full of surprises, and BIN News you have ceased to surprise me with your ignorance.

Confused, sorry we are not perfect. But at least we care about something that actually matters. Also, let’s go back to first grade for a second…you capitalize a person’s name. Such as, Ms. Payne. Good one buddy. Maybe you need to go back to school. Ever thought about that?

Back to what matters. Ms. Payne actually has the knowledge and guts to make a difference, so to all of you who are being immature about all of this, why don’t you go and try to do something right for a change, instead of trying to bring her down on something everyone knows is right.

    Love you Ms. Payne(:

Ok, you people who feel the need to sit there on your computers and start talking shit about Mrs. Payne have no reason to do that. You all just need to learn to grow the hell up! For one thing she is an amazing woman. She is one for the greatest teachers anybody can ever have. She not only teaches high school and raises her family, but she is willing to spend so much time helping out the community and her students. She puts so much time into helping others and all yall can do is talk shit about her? Ok that seems really mature. Why do adults seem the need to talk badly about such an amazing teacher? To me, you are acting like a bunch of damn 12 year olds. Learn to grow the hell up! All of you who feel the need to go onto a website about politics and about news, and decide to talk badly about a lady who has done so much to help her community and students, take your shit and shove it!
Also Confused, don’t sit there and talk bad about her students. Believe me, they are the real deal!! If you could ever meet them and learn what they have to say and see how informed they are and how they make their own opinions and are not influenced on the views of Mrs. Payne, then you can talk. Until then shut the hell up!
Keep up the good work Mrs. Payne, I support you and your students all they way!

I am also a student at Dutch Fork High School and look at this web site on my own time and make my own opinions on the articles that are posted. Ms. Payne introduced me to the site and i really enjoy it. Ms. Payne does not have a political agenda, she is doing her job (very well by the way) by teaching us what is going on in the world. To know more you need to get involved that is something Ms. Payne tells us often. BIN you need to know she can do both and even more she is a mother and a friend to many students. She has great connections to help us learn more about what is going on. I would have no idea about a lot of things in our state with out her. I thank Fits news for posting this article so more people can know about Ms. Payne. When she looked at the page the first time she said ‘that it I’m fired” I enjoy her class and want the best for her. She is worth watching. I am sorry but if all you see is her outside you do not know Ms.Payne she is great.

CALLING ALL HATERS (meaning BIN and friends):
THERES A REASON WHY WILL PUT UP THE “UNFAIR AND UNBALANCED” SLOGAN; IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, LEAVE.

but to each his own as they say.

we need more teachers like Ms. Payne. not only does she find a way to inspire people (will, remember the post when you came to my school the FIRST time and how my class blew it up? like that), but she also opens up opportunities in the community for her students. want an example? she was able to get one of her students a very prestigious internship with the comptroller general, Richard Eckstrom, when they were 15. thats commitment people.
not only is she committed to her job 24/7 (if you’ve seen her room, you’d know that she probably uses like, 91245239048 trees a DAY), she is committed to her students, community (local rotarian), and her states politics.
if anything, we should model any teacher-cadets after Ms. Payne.
    KUDOS MS. PAYNE!!!!

hunh, whats that you say?—”reggie, its horrible that she is exposing her students to this political porn site. something must be done!!!”—well you know what, hate all you want, but just because will is obviously more fly than you doesnt mean that hes going to stop doing what he does. political porn site, pfft, thats the CRAZIEST combination of nouns i have ever heard.
look people, just DONT come to the site. last time i checked there wasnt anybody holding a gun to your face screaming “GO TO FITSNEWS.COM RIGHT NOW BEFORE I BLOW YOUR MIND….LITTERALY!” so chill people.
    KUDOS WILL!!!

    Good grapes!

If you believe all these bogus posts then Ms. Payne must have over eleventy nine brazillion students who are fans. And one dead Confederate general.

And as noted in posts by others a number of those so called students have some serious grammar and spelling problems. Study harder kids.

Ms. Payne, our point is simple.

Leave your political agenda in the parking lot. And when you need to express yourself we suggest you avoid political porn sites run by convicted felons (criminal domestic violence is a felony – sic(k) willie can’t even vote).

I’m Balls McLongcock adoodledoo. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally retarded.

Just thought I would let ya’ll know who you are workin’ with.

    Ms. Payne -
Honestly, no blog could possibly explain how amazing she is. She makes people want to get involved and want to help others. She goes out of her way just to make sure we all understand what is truely going on in our community. Alive @ 25 was probably one of the best ideas ever. It gave a lot of people a way to cope with ones they had lost and a way to become aware of the facts. There are very few teachers that actually reach out to students. She is definately one of them. Ms. Payne, don’t change because I’m positive the people that matter, like you just the way you are.

    Cadie,
Chill out! Ms. Payne was definately at the school and it was at 5. The same time a basketball game, academic assistance, or any other school related (learning experience) activity was going on. So do not try to make Ms. Payne out to be some petafile. She’s engaged with three kids. She’s far from it.

& for all this pornsite this and porn site that – just because Ms. Payne can have kids, teach for longer than 2 years, and still be able to look nice and know how to dress does not make her a pornstar. This whole ‘lets all gang up on Ms.Payne’s style’ is getting kind of overrated. It’s pathetic, especially for some lifeless 40 year old. Grow up.

    Thanks(:

Come on honestly, y’all need to chill out. Grow up, be a little more mature. Yall have forgoten the issue at hand here. This is not about bashing my teacher and my friend. This is about have a right to know how our Reps. vote.
I do want to say that, Ms. Payne was at school when they called the radio at five. Also, Jermey did a great job reading that. And I think y’all should grow up and be mature. I think yall just wish you were as pretty as Ms. Payne. So y’all have to bash her. That’s not cool. And just cause y’all probally don’t have and since of fashion, because y’all thot Ms. Paynes shirt was ugly, don’t give you the right to bash the way she looks either. Bottom line grow up about this and stop wishing you were as great as Ms. Payne.
    Ms. Payne your the greatest!!!

He was with when she got fat – you should see those picures! Kelly you are a stench in the air of South Carolina. You would make me vote for a Democrat!
