		<description>P.S. For those of you who visit Wiktionary &amp; decide you want to hear

&quot;A Personal Appeal From Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales&quot; for donations,

Here is the an interesting e-mail exchange on the explanation of &quot;Wik&quot;

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Hello,

Before I would send any money if I had any money, could you please divulge how you came up with the name &quot;Wikipedia?&quot; The site is quite useful, though
sometimes slanted and inaccurate -- but it always makes me say &quot;WickedPedia&quot;
in my head. Is it in any way associated with wicca stuff?

The perennially curious would like to know.

Thanks,

Dear [Anonymous],

Thank you for your email. The name &quot;Wikipedia&quot; is a portmanteau (a combination
of portions of two words and their meanings) of the words wiki (a type of
collaborative Web site) and encyclopedia.

&quot;Wiki&quot; is a Hawaiian word for &quot;fast&quot;. The word &quot;Wiki&quot; began to be used for the
type of software on which Wikipedia runs back in 1994, when Ward Cunningham
wrote WikiWikiweb, the first such program.

It has nothing to do with wicca. Most people pronounce Wikipedia as
&quot;Wikeepedia&quot;.

If you haven&#039;t already looked at it, you may find the Wikipedia article on
Wikipedia to be of interest:

Oh -- Thanks Teresa. I found info to be hijacked a great deal this past year by those attempting to distort the truth to their own maniacal agendas.

Merry Christmas...
