Ever enterprising and yet never politically correct, the Israeli Army has debuted a YouTube channel on which viewers can watch footage of the ongoing military bombings in the Gaza Strip.

Don’t believe us? Head on over to the Israeli Defense Force’s YouTube Channel and take a look for yourself.

To this development we can only say “hell to the yeah.”

The Israelis quite clearly get it, and by “it” we mean everything from military strategy to public relations to downright chutzpah – which, not coincidentally, is a word they literally invented.

In explaining the Army’s new YouTube channel, Foreign Press Branch head Major Avital Leibovich illuminated the incredible ingenuity of the decision:

“The blogosphere and new media are another war zone. We have to be relevant there.”

The YouTube videos are only part of a broad campaign “to get the truth out there.” The Army has also distributed news briefings to bloggers, and it has plans to release its own video blogs as commentary on military operations.

The Israeli Army intuitively understands that an major military offensive sometimes requires it to be majorly offensive … and no doubt many people will be offended by the YouTube videos.

In fact, YouTube removed some of the videos but has returned them amid viewer uproar over the removal.

But that’s the point, actually. Offensives are offensive, people, and Israel is totally owning that.

By posting bombing footage, Israel forecloses criticism of its actions.

That’s how a “preemptive strike” is done, people.

If America had taken this type of approach in Iraq and Afghanstan, we would have cleaned house by now!

Here’s hoping they don’t botch this “opportunity” like they did the Lebanon debacle.

The Powell doctrine ought to work here: overwhelming force, get in, destroy bad guys and their weapons hidden in dilapidated buildings (a.k.a. “mosgues”), go home.

If only we would have done that in Iraq.

p.s. Mande – your writing makes my heart race :)
