First of all, playing in the AFC West is a lot like playing in the SEC West, except the teams aren’t quite as good.
Seriously, people. Mississippi State could have made the NFL playoffs in this division.
Anyway, since the rules dictate that a team representing this sorry-ass conference actually participate in the playoffs, we have the 8-8 Chargers hosting the 12-4 Indianapolis Colts in an AFC playoff game next Saturday.
In spite of his love affair with the Chargers cheerleaders, this does not please longtime Colts’ fan and FITS founding editor Sic Willie.
The truth is Indy just doesn’t match up well against San Diego, which knocked them out of the playoffs last season and has taken three of the last four meetings between them.
The Colts barely escaped with a win this season, getting a 51-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri as time expired to lift them over Philip Rivers and the pesky Bolts.
HEADS ARE ROLLING
Detroit fired head coach Rod Marinelli today after the Lions notched the first-ever 0-16 record in league history.
Oh well, at least they still have a hot sideline reporter … and cute fans.
Also getting canned today were Eric Mangini (NY Jets) and Romeo Crennel (Cleveland Browns). Fired during the 2008 season were Lane Kiffin (Oakland), Scott Linehan (St. Louis).
As many as eight other NFL coaches are facing the holiday axe, too, including a couple whose teams actually made the playoffs.
SPEAKING OF THE PLAYOFFS …
It’s Indianapolis at San Diego (NBC 8 PM) and Atlanta at Arizona (CBS 4 PM) this Saturday, with Baltimore at Miami (CBS 1 PM) and Philly at Minnesota (FOX 4:30 PM) this Sunday.
The four winners of those games will go on to play top seeds Tennessee and Pittsburgh in the AFC and the NY Giants and Carolina Panthers in the NFC.
And yes, the Cardinals, Falcons, Dolphins and Panthers are all in the playoffs. You’re not seeing things.

My beloved Chargers and your beloved Colts are on quite the collision course on this one… I like my Chargers chances – they do match up quite well with Manning’s Colts – except that we’ll still be missing Shawne Merriman for the game (and the season), who is the prime reason we match up well.
Should be a great game – winner goes to the Super Bowl, IMHO
B-)

All true, Mr. Gross … but what the FITS gals really want to know is when you plan on humiliating our founding editor on the chessboard again?
Everyone knows that is one of the few remaining checks on his Empire State-sized ego.
