Christmas Eve Earthrise

Believe it or not, that’s not President-elect Barack Obama’s ubiquitous “rise” logo.

It’s the first photo of an earth-rise, which was taken during the historic voyage of Apollo 8 forty years ago today.

It’s also the focus of perhaps the coolest-ever installment of “This Day In Tech” from Wired.com.

Courtesy of Wired, you can watch the famous Christmas Eve broadcast from Apollo 8 below, which is both beautiful and ironic – beautiful for obvious reasons, ironic because a present-day astronaut would probably get fired for reading the Bible from space.

A lot changes in forty years, doesn’t it? Of course a lot stays the same …

It’s not actually the first earthrise picture, just the first one taken by a human. See http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap081118.html
