She’s the country’s most recognizable sports babe. He’s an All-Star third baseman for the New York Mets.

And while they’re both insanely rich, famous and beautiful people, Erin Andrews and David Wright won’t be doing the “bow-chicka-wow-wow” in your living room on DVD anytime soon.

Sure, they know each other, seem to get along especially well and websites have speculated in the past that there was something more to their relationship.

Plus they’ve both used the tragically overplayed “just friends” designation to explain their relationship, which of course to many people proves they’re anything but.

Of course, all of these things do not an Erin Andrews-David Wright sex tape make, as is masterfully broken down by Dashiell Bennett over on DeadSpin.com.

The thing is, these people get the internet (because they mostly created it), so there is a certain savviness to the rumor. They knew exactly the right person to target in order to send basement dwellers like us into a frenzy. They left all the right clues in all the right places, in order to reel in anyone trying to verify the story. The claim is just outrageous enough to be believable—she’s a well-known web celebrity, but not so famous that no one would buy it. In other words, if you wanted to start a rumor that would set the internet aflame (and specifically sports nerds) it was the perfect crime.

Yup. Pretty impressive. They even added a fake quote from a guy whose company markets celebrity sex tapes (hmmm … now how do you get that job?) …
