Yeah- this year's tree is bad, but the state Christmas tree has been plagued for years.... consider back in 02 or 03 that they decorated it with CDs. Good idea, guys. Hang hundreds of shiny reflective disks on a tree in the sunshine at one of the busiest intersections in the city. Surprised that blinded drivers didn't take out the Confederate Monument.

And then there was the year that the workers hacked off the bottom half, then stood around and stared at it for a few hours. Thank goodness the garden club women came to the rescue- brought in about 8 baby trees to fill in the bottom.

But my favorite was the year they dragged the tree 45 miles from Fairfield County and left a trail of mulch down Assembly Street.

The presents under it are tacky, too.

Under the tree at a Get&Go, they would look fine.

This has been one of my pet peeves for years. Why does the Columbia Garden Club or whatever Columbia civic group it is that is in charge of decorating this thing have singular ownership over the STATE Christmas tree? Why not rotate it around annually to garden clubs around the state? Local artists could create new ornaments every year and the money could be raised locally to fund it.
