Jimmy Merrill Is Popular (Not)

Outgoing S.C. Majority Leader Jimmy Merrill tested the gubernatorial waters in his hometown of Charleston over the weekend, floating a 2010 trial balloon courtesy of friendly reporter Yvonne Wenger, who was no doubt blushing when she compared Merrill’s looks to those of former GOP Vice President Dan Quayle.

Awww … that’s very sweet, but not exactly how you want to start a puff piece.

From there, things continued to go tragically awry for “Dan Quayle, Jr.”

From the story:

“I am kind of at a crossroads. Do I do the political thing a little longer or do I move to the private sector? I don’t know,” Merrill said.

Decisions, decisions.

What’s funny about this quote is that prior to the onset of blogs, Merrill’s intense, soul-searching rhetorical interrogative would have just hung out there, a contemplative question mark for all of humanity to ponder.

But that was the old information age.

In an effort to engage its increasingly ADD readers and avoid losing increasingly valuable digital ground to increasingly popular interactive blogs, the Post and Courier now has a “comments section” on most of its online stories.

And not surprisingly, a few of the paper’s readers decided to weigh in on Jimmy Quayle’s alleged “indecision 2010.”

From one P&C reader:

Jim,

It’s time to go the private sector my friend. You’ve been the Republican Majority Leader in Columbia during a time of “feast and now famine”. The famine in my view is a direct result of irresponsible “liberal republicans” in Columbia who’ve literally enjoyed their liberal pork barrel spending shenanigans which have resulted in our not having “the rainy day fund” to now balance the budget. As a matter of fact this is the second major era of budget deficits this decade, the first following the bursting of the “dot com bubble” and the present one resulting from the bursting of the “real estate bubble”. In both cases, it is my opinion that disastrous consequences could have been avoided if the Republicans in the majority had conducted themselves in accordance with the GOP platform which clearly calls for personal responsibility, less government and lower taxes. This personal responsibility thing in my view applies to the “chiefs as well as the indians” my friend. The GOP majority has clearly failed “we the people”. I’m sorry to say this because on a personal level, you’re a very likeable guy. However you have not made a difference in Columbia. GO TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR NOW. As a matter of fact most of you guys in the General Assmembly SHOULD GO TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR NOW!!

Ouch …

Of course the irony there is that most of the people we elect to public office in this state would get chewed up and spit out by the private sector.

Merrill’s political consulting firm, Geechie Communications, is a perfect example of a company that’s stayed in business almost exclusively because of its founder’s position as Majority Leader (as opposed to its capabilities).

Anyway, we were also intrigued by Merrill’s assertion that he wasn’t a “super-duper follower.”

He’s right … the term is “fluffer.”

Well we have to have a coastal candidate. Who is it going to be? Any ideas Sic?

By jimmyhat on December 2nd, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Why’s everybody picking on jimmy. Unlike most of those guys and girls he is honoring some sort of term limits. The imposed term limit set when Jimmy became Majority Leader. Only time will tell if future Majority Leaders will honor that plege.

We could do a lot worse with Jimmy Merrill as Governor and if not him, James Smith.

We have to send a message to Columbia and Washington that we have quit electing Rhinos. Jim Merril voted for bigger government and was in office when budgets exploded. He was in a position of power and could have stopped a lot of spending and he chose not to .

Fiscal irresponsibility should not lead to higher office.

Bill is right — there has to be a coastal candidate. And given the political times, with the wheel turning Sanford’s way, it has to be someone who supports the gov’s conservative fiscal policies. My bet is that a dark horse like Chip Campsen or Tom Davis throws his hat into the ring.

“Fiscal irresponsibility should not lead to higher office…” right you are (No to the Rhinos)..!! But just look at the Peelers….Bob, Harvey, and Boone; they are irresponsible to the environment in Cherokee County when in fact there is Plasma technology that makes landfills OBSOLETE and they seem to care less..???! Look where it has gotten them..!!?

I did not see MR. Merrill at the Parkers Ferry Landfill meeting last night….where was HE at?? I did NOT see Any members from Charleston County Council there to get citizen feedback? I did NOT see Henry BROWN..?? Anne Petersen Hutto..?? Chip Campsen…??

We elect these people and then they ….HIDE ??? We email them and get what response….??? What coverage was in ANY paper in the STATE..???

The ONLY person….(ONLY !!) that calls me back regularly is the GOVERNOR’s OFFICE !!!!
With all the responsibility and headaches he has trying to call out the rascally Legislators and he and his staff find a moment to call and talk??

Is there ONLY one person in this state who even takes time to ..LISTEN ??!?

Mr. Merril..have you talked to ANYONE in Cherokee COUNTY…???! …or ADAM’s RUN…!!!

…both locations are in SOUTH CAROLINA…!!!

By Reader on December 2nd, 2008 at 7:55 pm

Gov’s office always returns my e-mails with a phone call — every time!!!!!!!

Is that way cool OR WHAT???!!!???

And I don’t even care if it’s that he wants to avoid Lunatic Fringe Lawsuits!!!

:)

I think it says enough about Merril’s chances with the GOP primary electorate that his only supporter who has posted thus far would pick James Smith second. Coastal Watching- Campsen is a good guy and a solid reformer, but about as exciting as learning the Dewey decimal system. I don’t know a lot about Davis except he should be a reliable vote for reform and he apparently knows something about winning a race- he beat an incumbent female.

If you want a coastal candidate, look no farther than Leon. I know he is a Democrat, but in name only. He certainly has had no problems “going along to get along” with the leadership in the House, maybe we would see a new era of what some would call cooperation, others would call rubber stamp.

Coastal Watching has a point. Tom Davis brings a whole new dynamic to the Governor’s race. Someone dedicated to fiscal conservatism and to the betterment of this State. Even when the Senate Caucus threw the kitchen sink at him, he still beat the incumbent. Will see what January brings.

Why do I ahve a mental picture of spittle and foam flying from the mouths of some of the posters listed above?
