Dear Ball Coach: Beat Clemson, Or Resign
Dear Ball Coach,
We were as excited as anybody four years ago when you came to our little college town.
Seriously, we thought it was going to be the start of a brand new era where nobody called us the Shamecocks, the Lamecocks or the Chokin’ Chickens anymore (or was that Chicken Chokers?) …
All that historical mediocrity was supposed to disappear because the “Cock-n-Fire” was here … because you were here.
We even went out and bought one of those “Spurrier ‘em” shirts and our own officially-licensed Darth Visor.
And for awhile there everything was alright. Not awesome, mind you, but alright.
After you went 15-10 your first two years with two minor bowl appearances (good by our standards here in Columbia, but not great), our joy remained unbroken because we saw great things on the horizon.
We figured you were still adapting your “offensive genius” to the changing college game, you know, the Urban Meyer game.
We even agreed with the University’s decision two years ago to give you a $500,000 annual raise, to extend your contract to 2012 and to double your annual buy-out clause to half a million smackers.
And why not? It seemed to be paying dividends last year when the Gamecocks – yes, our beloved Gamecocks – were ranked sixth in the nation with a 6-1 record.
But that rarefied air is long gone, and based on what we’ve seen this season it sure doesn’t seem to be coming back anytime soon.
The wheels have fallen off, and frankly, you haven’t figured out how to put them back on again.
South Carolina is 7-11 since last year’s blazing start, and while we’re glad that those seven wins have all come this year (meaning we get to go to another non-BCS, possibly non-New Year’s Day bowl), let’s be honest – your offense hasn’t had a damn thing to do with any of them.
Ellis Johnson’s defense has won all seven of those games, and his guys have played well enough to win you three more had your boys been able to move the football on offense.
And frankly, we don’t blame the defense one bit for giving up in the second half against Florida – not after your offense (and a botched special teams play) had spotted the Gators three touchdowns early in the game. After all, it’s not like the “Cock-n-Misfire” was going to get us back in the game even if we had been able to stop Florida from rolling up 56 points.
Speaking of Florida, you did a great job recruiting when you coached there. Not so much here.
And the guys you have recruited can’t seem to stay out of trouble.
Seriously, what’s up with all that?
Anyway, we know we’re going to catch a lot of grief for calling you out like this.
People for whatever reason still worship the ground you walk on around here, and you’ve got those Under Armour products literally flying off the shelves.
But we’re onto you, Ball Coach. And in case you haven’t noticed, we don’t particularly care if people get pissed at us for stating the obvious … which in this case is pretty, well, obvious.
Four years into your tenure here, South Carolina is still a middle-of-the-road SEC team that lacks the talent to compete for an SEC championship.
Well … lacks the talent on one side of the ball, anyway.
Your side of the ball.
So here’s the deal … there will probably be a lot of people who comment on this site calling us fair weather fans, which is fine. We’ve been following this team since back when you were earning a 60.1 quarterback rating in the NFL, but whatever.
We were here for George Rogers’ Heisman, the Fire Ants, back-to-back Outback Bowl wins under Lou Holtz and we’ll be here Lord willing for the day when someone finally manages to turn this program into a consistent winner … which our deserving fans are so desperate for that they actually celebrate first downs.
But we’re just not sure that you’re the guy to build that “consistent winner” anymore … and if you drop Saturday’s game against Clempsun … err, Clemson … we’ll know you’re not.
What are we supposed to say? You’re coming to us with 6-6 and 7-4? In your “money years?” With no blue chippers in the stable?
That’s what they call “not good.”
But you should be able to earn a reprieve from our angst this weekend.
Why? Because the Farmers … err, Tigers … suck this year, Ball Coach. They suck bad.
Your boys should be able to march into Death Valley and roll them up with relative ease, earning a trip to that New Year’s Day bowl game and a chance to get nine wins on the season.
Plus, you may even be able to convince a few in-state talents to stick around and play for you in the process.
Clemson is 4-4 in the ACC, Ball Coach … which in case you forgot stands for “Anybody Can Compete.”
You, on the other hand, coach in the SEC … which means you should be able to start cheerleaders on the offensive line and still have an athletic advantage.
So please, go out and win us this game, will ya?
Get yourself to 2-2 against the Farmer Nation and then go and win us a halfway decent bowl game so that we can at least pretend this program has some positive momentum going for it.
Because if you drop this one, Ball Coach, you really ought to resign.
And if we were your AD, we’d certainly give you that option before we showed you and that $1.7 million salary of yours the door.
Sincerely,
Sic Willie and the FITS gals
P.S. – As much as you may not believe us, we’re hoping against hope that one day soon you’ll make us eat every word of this article. Literally … every word. And we’d be glad to do it, because that would mean we were consistently winning, which is what it’s all about … no matter what that sap Grantland Rice said.

I think he should leave whether you want him to or not. He would have a much greater chance of success at Tennessee, at any number of other places, or on the golf course. SC can’t compete in the SEC East, and never will. SC should be in the ACC.

Ahh Carolina, where coach’s careers go to die.
Even if Clemson loses they still win this year with a new head coach in place by Monday.
Maybe it’s just time to give up, thank god for the law school and Darla Moore then accept the fact that USC is and will always will be mediocre at best. A place where everyone can share knowing they are, and will always be, pwnd by a cow college up in the hills.
Perhaps a new rival is needed, maybe Furman or Winthrop are better suited for Carolina, the Gamecock nation could move past being the victim of (fill in this year’s excuse here).

I love it when Taters stay up late and get all mean. You two farmers are funny.

flipnut,
i love to hear you little tigers talk. Without knowing you i guesss i can bet on you being one of those famous tiger fans that did not graduate from clempzun and has has never been to a game in memorial stadium (death valley is in baton rouge and is not named after a piece of rock that someone brought back from another state and has ZERO signifcance to the Palmetto State).
From Danny to Dabbo….a program in the right direction. it is always nice to see your team choke the big ones. Bowls for you are either peach or the “blue turf”. Oh….my bad, also the tire bowl in charlotte.
i think you should stop worrying about gamecock athletics and concentrate your energy on sweeping wake, duke and maryland in the same season.

US News and World Report ranks Clemson as the 61st best University in the country while USC is 108. Clemson has beat the might Gamecocks of the might SEC 9 of the last 11 times. Even in Clemson’s down year they are a 1 point favorite. USC may win this year, but have not shown any significant improvements despite two hall of fame coaches. Neither school is among the national elite on or off the field, but one thing is sure, Clemson continues to OWN South Carolina on both fronts.

I have spent a significant amount of time in my life reading. Novels, sports columns, political columns, textbooks, journals, legal decisions, statutes . . . you name it. I have a couple of degrees, so as you can imagine I have read a lot of BS in my day. None of that BS, however, lights even the faintest candle to the series of words that comprise this article. Few authors have so clearly exhibited their ignorance about the subject they are writing on as have these. If I began to set forth the thousands of reasons why this is wrong, I would be writing for three days. I am going to let this go, and pretend like I never read this.

As a Fla fan living in this state for a brief time, nothing thrills me more than seeing SC and CU fans bicker over their football teams than when the bicker over US news and world report rankings (which don’t mean a damn thing, but for anyone who thinks they do, go ahead and check out where UF is compared to those two schools). The only thing that is more fun than watching USC and CU fans bickering about US news and world report rankings is seeing CU fans talking about how much they own SC. Every night they go to bed thanking god for SC since they know that SC is all they have (other than a purchased national championship). What would they do if SC did go for another rival like Wofford or Winthrop, as one poster suggested? They would have nothing left. They can get on here and suggest it all they want, but at night they’ll pray it won’t happen.

nicky,
Did you know that Clemson’s Memorial Stadium was called Death Valley before LSU’s? LSU’s was originally nicknamed “deaf valley” to distinguish it from Clemson’s nickname. Over the years it was converted to Death Valley. Clemson’s stadium nickname, in fact, came before the rock. It was nicknamed Death Valley because Cemetery Hill overlooks the stadium. It was only after the nickname gained popularity that the rock from Death Valley, CA was given as a gift to Frank Howard. A complimentary history lesson for you to try to wrap your mind around…

The gamecocks can beat clemson the next ten years and you fans will still go back to a time when you use to win. It’s what you do. You stole one championship by cheating almost 30 years ago and you still think that’s makes you an elite team. Wake up it’s a new day clemson is no more.

Yes, Clemson fans dwell on things like reality – what actually has happened. Carolina fans like to throw out, “but but but what if Carolina were to win the next decade, that’d make you guys look stupid.” Get back to me when it actually happens, k? We like to dwell on that time way back in the dark ages when Clemson won all the time. Wait, whats that? We’ve won 9 of the last 11? Wow, that seems recent…

Win, lose or draw, the Tigers are just plain fun to watch. When the year began, the talk was fantastic and there was awe. Even when Bama made them look like a Divison III team, the talk was fantatic and there was still a little awe. Even when the ACC was humiliated on a national stage, the stage on which they would excel, the talk was still fantastic, minus the awe. But when Bowden was booted, and replaced by a guy name Dabo, that’s when I finally got it.
And when I learned that Dabo wasn’t his given name, and that it was derived from the inability of a sibling to say “that boy” and that it stuck throughout his adult life, I knew that no matter what, the Tigers were always going to be fun. Just plain old easy fun.

Top quality players simply won’t come to Columbia or a school like USC. Holtz and Spurrier and two great coaches that have come in and failed, just because they simply can’t get decent players to come to USC.
By flipnut on November 29th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Time for the Ol’visor boy to put up or move on to better golf courses. Then again, if you lose Spurrier who would possibly want to follow in his wake. USC is not a school where coaches stop on their way up the ladder, it’s become a last chance to save a career before joining ESPN or becoming an assistant again.
And Nicky, please stop using the internet, your embarrassing yourself and the Carolina fans who were able to kick the coke and graduate. Before you go on another rant with all your “facts” make sure there correct. And not just something you daddy told you every November to make the shame of being a coot easier to handle. Your on the internet after all, there is no excuse, not even stupid, for getting simple facts wrong.
