Forget waiting until he’s actually done something, a public school in New York has already decided to change its name to Barack Obama Elementary School … before its namesake has even been sworn in as President.
We were sort of hoping this was a joke, but it’s not.
And so the former Ludlum Elementary School now takes the name of a guy who wouldn’t send his kids to a public school if his life depended on it … but obviously doesn’t give a damn if your kids are stuck there.
In fact, Obama’s plan is basically to continue spending boatloads of taxpayer money (that we don’t have) on a failing system in the hope things will get better.
Groundbreaking, we know.
We stumbled upon this little gem courtesy of the website Brown Man Thinking Hard, which is actually written by a brown man, err … black man … err, African-America … err … whatever.
Anyway, from this guy’s take:
After a few enjoyable moments picturing New York City children shouting the name of their school at the top of their lungs, I had a sobering thought. The schools named after Martin Luther King Jr. house some of the poorest performing student bodies in the country. The streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. seem to draw drug dealers and petty criminals like magnets, and often sport the highest black-on-black crime rate in their local area.
So this name thing could be a good thing, but only if we decide to make it a good thing.
Of course, “making it a good thing” doesn’t include blindly subscribing to the cult of a guy who hasn’t even put his hand on the Bible yet.
