Simple. The party tried to take Stevens down in the primary, but he won. Once the indictment came down, there was not enough time to get a new name on the ballot. So now, to avoid the doomsday scenario of the Dems holding 60 Senate seats, the Republicans have to grit their teeth and hope Stevens can hold the seat until a special election can be scheduled.
