George Strait Twangy-Twangs Best

By fitsnews • on November 13, 2008

Since we’ve never lived in a trailer park or had sex with anyone we’re related to (that we know of), it’s safe to say country music doesn’t really speak to us.

Sure we’ve had dogs that “passed on” and pick-up trucks that done went and broke down, and our founding editor knows a thing or two about cheatin’ hearts, but we’ve chosen to express how those things have impacted our lives in ways that don’t sound like two cats trying to kill each other.

Seriously, people. We love Johnny Cash, Rascal Flatts and the Dixie Chicks - and obviously we’d go there in a heartbeat with Carrie Underwood - but if the entire genre of country music were outlawed by Barack Obama on his first day in the Oval Office, we might be willing to give his whole “spread the wealth” thing a chance.

Anyway, country music held its big awards show last night and George Strait won four of whatever they call those things - which means he now has 22 of them for his career.

We couldn’t tell you a single George Strait song if somebody put a sawed-off to our heads, and Lord willin’ an tha creek don’t rise we’re gonna keep it that way.

Again, we’re sorry to those of you who like the soothing sound of redneck voices, but we’re pretty sure you lose an IQ point for every hour of country music you listen to.

Which might explain South Carolina’s public schools

Of course the good news about making fun of country music fans is that the vast majority of them can’t read … and are still a few decades away from figuring out that the “Internet” has nothing to do with catching a fish.

Oh Will, we mock that which we don’t know. It actually saddens me that you don’t know a little about George Strait. Tens of millions of American buy his music because he sings about things that speak to them - life, love and the loss of it, being a father — just regular everyday stuff. Why is that something to make light of?

Well Will, I’m going to help you. Here’s a few songs by George Strait you might like: Ace in the Hole, Love Without End Amen, The Chair, Easy Come Easy Go, even his “Fly Me to the Moon” duet with Frank Sinatra, or his “Shift Work” duet with Kenny Chesney. Try those for starters. It’s pretty good stuff.

Ahhh … Country. You pulled on our Lee Greenwood strings now!

Oh well, at least it’s not elevator music.

Actually Sic, I suggest George’s song, The Fireman. I think you’ll enjoy it. Sorta sounds like you he’s singing about, you wild sexy beast (if you care, my favorite Georgie song is Carrying Your Love with Me, a song surely you could use on Mrs. Sic)

THE FIREMAN

They call me the fireman
Thats my name
Makin my rounds all over town
Puttin out old flames

Well everybodyd like to have what Ive got
I can cool em down while theyre smolderin hot
Im the fireman
Thats my name

Last night they had a bad one a mile or two down the road
Well my buddy walked out and left this woman burnin out of control
Well I was down there in bout an hour or so
With a little mouth to mouth she was ready to go
Im the fireman thats my name

They call me the fireman
Thats my name
Makin my rounds all over town puttin out all flames
Well everybodyd like to have what Ive got
I can cool em down while theyre smolderin hot
Im the fireman thats my name…burn em up

Ive got fire-engine red t-bird automobile
In a minute or less I can be dressed fit to kill
I work twenty-four on and twenty-four off
When they get too hot, they just give me a call
Im the fireman, thats my name

They call me the fireman, thats my name
Makin my rounds all over town puttin out old flames
Well everybodyd like to have what Ive got
I can cool em down while theyre smolderin hot
Im the fireman, thats my name

They call me the fireman
Thats my name.

Will, I’m more or less with you on modern-day pop-country. But you’re a knowledgeable music fan….surely, you’ve got a taste for Hank Wiliams, for a little Lefty Frizell or Webb Pierce, maybe some classic Waylon Jennings or Merle Haggard music.

Hey “fits”, I like country music and George Strait and I can read - surprise!!! I just read your comments and, while you’re really not worth it, thought I’d write and set the record, ahem, strait. Of course it’s your right not to “like” country music, but if you’re going to comment on an artist who’s sold more than 70 million albums and had more than 50 #1 singles and been consistent in a career spanning 3 decades, you should at least familiarize yourself with a legend instead of ridiculing someone who’s admired, respected and looked up to by not only his fans but by all the other artists in attendance at the CMAs last night. When I was a child my mother told me that if you have “nothing nice to say, say nothing”. That’s a lesson you need to learn yourself!!!

Will, I always love your writing and know that much of it is tongue-in-cheek, so as an educated redneck I certainly take no offense at what you wrote. Just so you and anyone else who reads this will know, George Strait has more #1 hits than anyone else in history in any genre.

Willie, if you had seen the blond in the rubber dress on the CMA’s last night, you would probably like it more. True “country” fans are loving it less. Good grief — whoever she was looked and moved like a cheap whore on muskatel.

Wrong on this one, Willie: Great country music out there, from George and many, many others. Not my first choice either, but there is great country music from years gone by (Patty Loveless) and today (Jamey Johnson). And many, many other talented artists in between.

You “smart people”, as you probably think you are, need to do a little research. I will have you to know that this redneck was a straight A student and graduated high school in three years with 18 college credit hours (I had to do my entire senior years course work in ten weeks) and am now an excelling college student. I LOVE country music and have an IQ of 131 at the age of 17. I really take offense to ignorant people like you Will. You really should educate yourself next time before you make biggotist comments like that, not only making an attack on a few of the best country artists in history but those of us who enjoy things like country music! STOP BEING AN ID10T!!!
