Whales Don’t Vote

Although the leftist spin of Aaron Sorkin’s TV masterpiece The West Wing was never very subtle, the show did have some incredibly funny moments … like the time fictitious White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry walked into the Oval Office to raise an issue about whales.

“Do Whales Vote?” the President asked him.

Yeah … they don’t, which was pretty much the end of the conversation.

Anyway, it appears the same logic was applied today by the U.S. Supreme Court, which decided that the need of the U.S. Navy to use sonar in its training exercises outweighed inconveniencing the eardrums of endangered beaked whales.

The decision – which was the first of the court’s new term – paved the way for the Navy to continue its exercises off the coast of California.

Navy 1, Whales 0.

If we did prohibit the Navy from using sonar whenever whales are in the ocean, then Soviet/Chinese/North Korean/Iranian submarines can hide among the whales (cuz they don’t wank off thinking about whales like we do) and pop up in San Francisco Bay and blast the place to smithereens.

Then again, considering the Castro District, Tenderloin District, Oakland, and East Palo Alto, that would not necessarily be a bad thing. Tho’ it would be the end of Apple and Google as we know it.
