Who’s Behind “Gay” Robo-Calls?
Anonymous, undisclosed robo-calls have invaded a South Carolina Senate district, making national news and sparking a flood of visceral reaction and insider intrigue … or have they?
Could the whole thing be a “set-up?”
No one knows for sure at this point who the calls are targeting, how widespread they are or who they are designed to help or hinder … and of course, no one knows who is behind them.
What we know is that yesterday, questionable automated voice messages were reported in the contentious State Senate race between GOP Rep. Mick Mulvaney and Democrat Mandy Powers Norrell. According to a voter who received one of the calls, they were placed from a “DC Call Center” from the telephone number 202-607-2619, which has been used for calls like this in the past.
The calls – from a fictitious group called the “Alliance for the Advancement of Gays and Lesbians” – encouraged voters to support Powers-Norrell based on her pro-gay, pro-choice stances, and were immediately blamed on Mulvaney.
Reached by phone this morning, Mulvaney said his campaign was “absolutely not” associated with the calls, and was in fact trying to determine who was responsible for them.
“I’ve run two campaigns,” Mulvaney told FITS. “I ran a clean campaign two years ago and I’ve run a clean campaign this year. You’d have to talk to my opponent about negative campaigning.”
“If I find out my own mother did this, I would condemn it and demand that it be stopped,” Mulvaney added. “It is hate-mongering and it is against everything our campaign is about.”
FITSNews has attempted to contact several potential guilty parties this morning to determine who is responsible for the calls, but culpability will likely revolve around where they were delivered – and whether or not they went to Republican or Democratic households.
Clearly, if the calls were widespread in nature – and delivered in conservative, GOP-heavy areas of the district – then speculation would fall on the S.C. Senate Republican Caucus.
Caucus communications director Wesley Donehue told FITS this morning that his organization had nothing to do with the calls, however, Donehue’s previous employer, Warren Tompkins, does have a history of questionable robo-calling.
Having said that, anecdotal reports are that the calls have gone exclusively to moderate and left-leaning voters, which would mean that the real culprit is – ironically – more likely than not on the Powers-Norrell side of the aisle.
Specifically, there are four faces we’d put in this lineup …
First would be the S.C. Senate Democratic Caucus, which has already unleashed some nasty negative attacks against Mulvaney in this race.
When you consider that this story originated on a liberal S.C. website – and was then passed on to a liberal national website – it’s easy to see how the Democrats would gin up a “negative campaigning” story against Republicans in an effort to diminish their own underhanded tactics.
Brilliant strategery, people.
Second on our “suspect list” would be the firm of Richard Quinn & Associates, which has a history of third-party attacks and is employed by the S.C. Trial Lawyers, which is backing Norrell’s campaign. Interestingly enough, Quinn’s online mouthpiece was one of the first “Republican” sites to pick up the robo-call story yesterday evening.
Third, you simply can’t investigate a story like this without at least considering the involvement of legendary political mudslinger Rod Shealy, who has been accused of these same “fake endorsement” robo calls as recently as last year.
As far as we know, Shealy doesn’t have a dog in this fight, however.
Fourth, and finally, we have to ask … did Norrell do this to herself?
It’s not entirely inconceivable, particularly considering that the calls appear to be targeting precisely the sort of moderate-to-liberal voters who would be offended by them.
Norrell has run one of the dirtiest, most deceptive campaigns we’ve ever seen in this state – and finding a creative way to paint her opponent with that same “dirty campaigner” brush during the last week of the race makes sense for her.
We doubt she was foolish enough to directly involve herself in such an undertaking, but it’s not out of the question.
Needless to say, FITS is attempting to secure further details on the originating phone number(s) and caller ID information associated with these calls, as well as the geography and ideology of the individuals who received them.
Anyone with information should e-mail us at info@fitsnews.com.
Oh … and feel free to take our poll and vote for who you think is the most likely culprit …

Got a piece of mail from the SC Republican Party yesterday that
was pretty funny. On the left side it said to vote a “straight Republican
ticket” underneath photos of McCain, Palin, Joe Wilson, and one other
candidate I don’t recall. Lindsey Graham’s photo was the only one on the right side all by himself. Does that mean Lindsey is not part of the straight Republican ticket?

When did the calls take place? Fogle has a really good transcript/recording of the call, wonder how that was acquired?!?! Inquiring minds…

Here in Georgetown county, the local GOP has been playing ads blasting Democrat Vida Miller for her lack of support for the anti-gay marriage bill. Given that this topic is used by the Republicans in such an open manner here, is it strange to assume they are also beating this tired issue in the robo calls as well. Face it the GOP has totally given up in appealing in any intellectual way this year and are focusing on stereotypical bashing of races, orientations, etc.

The BIN News Editorial Staff vote goes to “Duh” for the only intelligent post on in this thread. sic(k) willie has admitted taking “chump change” from Mulvaney. And Mulvaney is the only elected official to ever post with his real name on this sad little blog. Any elected official who would stoop that low will probably do just about anything. Even sling mud.

This smells like a “Quinn special”….isn’t Rick working for the Trial Lawyers? Why isn’t he on the list?
By Agnes on October 29th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Smells like Quinn Spirit…I love that ’smells like teen spirit’ lyric the young folks sing about. I use it every chance I get.
BIN, you are just stalking Willie’s game again. You need help.
By notverybright on October 30th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Mr. Folks, are you willing to say on the record in clear, direct, and non-smartass and non-parsing language that you had nothing to do with this robocall and do not know anything about who is behind it?
By BIN News Editorial Staff on October 30th, 2008 at 8:19 am
We here at BIN News wanted to take this opportunity to tell everyone that WE do in fact endorse Mandy Powers. We are gay, we hate the boy scouts, and we think that the Bible is just simply a historical text full of fun stories similar to our collection of Dr. Seuss.
If you agree with us, and hate the trio of Sic(k), Mic(k), and the Bible…..then vote Mandy!

Bin, where are you located? If in the area I want to make sure I steer clear of the bathrooms…….since that seems to be your “business”.

rick, if BIN’s not somewhere in the stinky places of Lexington County – I’m a monkey’s mother-in-law.

As a Lancaster resident, Mandy has her own folks making calls directly, not robo-style. A good friend of mine got a call on Tues evening at home and the young, African-American on the other end of the line began immediately bashing Mick, with lies about his vote on school vouchers.
When asked specificially by the Norrell caller, “Can Mandy count on your support and vote in the election” , my friend stated no. He said, “That’s a shame; you must not know about Mandy.”
My friend calmly stated that yes, she does not only know Mandy, but “grew up with Mandy” in the same public schools that Mandy likes to brag about. Continuing, “that is exactly WHY I will be voting for Mick Mulvaney.”
The caller, again, representing Mandy Norrell, quickly huffed up and mumbled a few choice comments before RUDELY hanging up on this lady.
I can’t help but think of the kind of people she has supporting her. Most are seniors that are naive, and no very little about politics until she announced her election. They mean well, but are being duped by Mandy’s lies.
Others are extreme, racist Democrats– i.e. Linda Blackmon- Brace who are canvassing the projects in Lancaster with color-coded ballots showing exactly who the Black candidates. I know Mandy is not black, but she has aligned herself with this group and their antics. Guess she is an honorary member. . .

I didn’t know Mick was gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
By rick on October 30th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Might want to check out what the African-American Democrats believe in when it comes to exercising their right to be involved in the election process.

I guess Mandy learned her business in the same place as Hussein and Bin learned theirs…..After being denied their rightful access to the voting booth, Hussein is in an awful hurry to deny that right to his community. Wonder if he learned that from his cousin in Kenya? Is that result the result we get if he loses?
By Sollicitus Civis on October 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Ahhhh lancastermommy…. your true colors surfaced with the last paragraph. That, plus not knowing the difference between ‘no’ and ‘know.’ Your comments are irrelevant. Are you linking Mandy with African-Americans to scare white voters? That really is an old, outdated tactic. It is obvious you live in the 21st century since you know how to use a computer and the Internet. Why not move your mentality into the 21st century as well. Check your 19th century Jim Crow mentality at the door.

The answer to the question at hand is Kris Crawford
By hmmmm on October 31st, 2008 at 10:31 am
Isn’t Crawford the hate mongering doctor from the Pee Dee with the enormous ego? Me think he too might be closet gay that attacks gays for political purposes only. So hypocrtical.
