Vote On Clemson’s Next Football Coach

By fitsnews • on October 27, 2008

With speculation mounting in Farmertown, U.S.A. as to who might follow Tommy Bowden as Clemson (a.k.a. Clempsun) University’s next “non-interim” head football coach, we figured we’d give our loyal fans a chance to voice their thoughts … and their votes.

We wrote an article the other day about the Tigers’ targeting current Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, but we also understand they’re talking to (or at least interested in talking to) former Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin, Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson (who used to coach at Furman), Duke head coach David Cutcliffe and several others. And obviously interim head coach Dabo Swinney still has a few games left in his audition.

So who’s it gonna be?

And just out of curiosity, is former head coach Danny Ford too old for a comeback? Because let’s be honest, the Farmers still haven’t gotten over losing their tobacco-spittin’ redneck-in-chief eighteen years ago after Ford had a falling out with the Clempsun administration.

“Ol’ Danny” posted a remarkable 96-29-4 record as Clempsun’s head coach, including an 6-2 record in bowl games, five ACC championships and one national title.

Of course Ford may have been working with some professional athletes during that time, but …

Anyway, to your votes!

Will Muschamp is primed and ready… He used to be a force in the SEC, at LSU under Nick Saban(current Head Coach of the #2 Bama Tide) was the Defensive Coordinator when they won the won the 2003 BCS Championship, and then after a short trip to the NFL Miami Dolphins with Saban, he headed for Auburn, and now manning a Texas Defense that’s facing Big 12 top 10 ranked teams on a weekly basis(obviously best QB conference this year).

Will Muschamp hasn’t been a Head Coach anywhere, but time under the likes of Nick Saban, Tommy Tubbervile, and Mack Brown would lead you to believe that he can do more than match up some X’s and O’s on Defense. This is clearly the guy Clemson should be chasing. Just make sure he finds himself the right OC to utilize the talent that hasn’t bailed to find success somewhere else.

Ironically, Death Valley could fin itself in the ICU, if Dabo Swinney can’t pick up some more W’s and Clemson can’t get a jump start on the Coaching search.

What? No Bill Cowher on the list? Come on. I’ve hear that to hire Kiffin, we’d have to hire his dad too, which obviously wouldn’t be so bad considering the Tampa Bay defense has been amazing for the better part of this decade. As for Bobby Johnson, he’s out. You don’t lose to Duke and still be in the running. David Cutliffe would be great. He’s a great offensive minded coach, which Clemson needs. But I want Bill Cowher! We want the jaw!

Like I said before: SKIP HOLTZ IS ON THE LIST.

By fitsnews on October 28th, 2008 at 2:00 am

Cowher and Holtz are two to look at, definitely. And Skip would love to stick it to the Cocks.

Course ECU is sorta flash-in-the-panning it after those initial strong upsets.

Dreamers,

Bill Cowher and Skip Holtz are out…..never gonna happen.

Clemson made the mistake already of taking a former South Carolina coach (Brad Scott).

Cowher would never disgrace himself to coach in the State of Mediocrity….or I mean South Carolina…..after seeing what happens to GREAT coaches such as Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier who have both ruined their reputations as good coaches after becoming SC taxpayers.

PLUS after the salary debacle with Tommy Bowden, one can be assured that Clemson will be more fiscally conservative with their next head coach.

Will Muschamp is the next head coach…..end of story.

If we cant vote for the girl in the picture, how about Jimmy Johnson?(who happens to own some land close by)

Skip is definitely on the list. Just ask anyone in the upper administration, or anyone on the Board. As far as “Clemson made the mistake already of taking a former South Carolina coach (Brad Scott),” seriously? Is that how you analyze things?
Duce Staley said he had talked to Cowher, and after laughing, Cowher said he had no interest in coaching at Clemson. The way the Wolfpack keep playing, I’m sure we’ll see him at his alma mater before too long.
Leaving Texas to become Clemson’s head coach is a step down… even if you’re a defensive coordinator. Texas is probably going to work out some Jimbo Fisher/Bobby Bowden type deal, where Muschamp just takes over the program when Brown leaves.
Skip Holtz has proved he can turn a program around, heck he can even build a program. He built Connecticut’s program. He was instrumental in turning Carolina’s around in 2000. Now, he has taken the doormat of North Carolina football (believe it or not), and made them a ConferenceUSA contender… they even beat WVU and Virginia Tech this year. So, yeah, they didn’t live up to the early hype… then again, when is the last time Clemson did?

Cower is out, though should be at least pursued. Bobby Johnson, should at least be interviewed. God, I hope the administration doesn’t screw up an hire Skip Holts. Building Conn. and EC is one thing, running a serious program is another, and he has proven through his experience with the Shamecocks he cannot hack it. Muschamp would be a good fit, and may very well come to Clemson (spelled C-L-E-M-S-O-N). But Clemson’s defense has not been the sore spot since Dantzler graduated.

It has been the offense. A few names I am not hearing are Chris Peterson from Boise State, or Mike Leach from Texas Tech. Either one of these guys would be great for the program.

The moral of the story is there are too many coaches out there to make speculation on which one will be hired. I just hope to God, Clemson’s (spelled C-L-E-M-S-O-N-’S)administration doesn’t hire another mediocre coach like the ones we have had in the past.

My buddy told me Spurrier just bought a house on Lake Hartwell. Its a perfect fit. Just wait…you will see!! Go Tigers!!

By Jimmy Byrnes on October 28th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Tiger Jeff, Nice try…Didn’t you post this on another CLEMSON football website recently?

By David on October 28th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Danny Ford is the only choice. Give five good years rebuild the program. Then like Nebraska Osborne take over athletic area of football especially and get a new coach of his choosing.

Joe Gibbs just landed at Pickens International today to interview and play golf at that cow pasture the walker course

By tigerjeff on October 29th, 2008 at 9:45 am
