Teacher Implicated In Sex Scandal Resigns

A South Carolina high school teacher implicated in yet another sex scandal has submitted his resignation, sources tell FITS.

Jeffrey Browder, a forty-year-old social studies teacher at Dutch Fork High School in suburban Columbia S.C. has provided district officials with a letter of resignation, which will be accepted at a board meeting on Monday.

A highly-placed district official confirmed the report, and said that Browder’s case has been referred to the South Carolina Department of Education to determine whether or not his teaching license will be revoked.

News of the allegations against Browder were first published here a week ago, prompting several students to confirm the reports anonymously (and further allege that the incidents were covered up by the school), while dozens of other students took to the Internet to defend their teacher.

Needless to say, this story is still far from over …

This is happening all over the country. Go to http://www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. They have documented over 380 of these types of incidents since just the beginning of 2008.

If justice still exists in our society, it may have a lot of people other than Mr. Browder to deal with before this is laid to rest. Here’s an example of a probable forced resignation simply because of an accusation. AN ACCUSATION, not a fact, not a proven event or situation, but a claim of wrongdoing submitted to the school, fanned into a hot flame of controversy and side-choosing by a web site hungry to create sensationalism and draw a crowd to justify its existence. The web site speaks as if the accusation is valid, makes a few detrimental comments of its own, and condemns the school for not making it a police affair. Had there been proof or apparent proof, it should certainly have been a police matter. Likewise, it should have been dismissed if it had no merit.

Consider that this could very well be a crushing blow to a brilliant career earned from hard work and dedication because of (1) an allegation without merit brought against Mr. Browder as retaliation or for some other personal reason, (2) the web site giving his name out for public judgement without ANY facts (reminiscent of a witch hunt), and (3) a school eager to establish credibility by a response to the allegation – any king of response.

Questions still exist. If the accusation was not properly supported, why wasn’t it dropped without Mr. Browder’s need for resigning. If it was substantiated and became a criminal offense, why weren’t the police brought in? Everybody is entitled to protection and defense of his or her good name. Likewise, those who commit criminal acts should be prosecuted.

There has been no justice here, only injustice. If Mr. Browder is totally innocent of any wrong-doing, the damage has already been done and could not be undone even with the combined efforts of all the media available today. If someone brought a meritless allegation against you and a web site published your name immediately, How would you handle it? An educator’s job is to teach and it doesn’t always gain every student’s respect or friendship.

HEAR, HEAR! I agree with LJ and all his points. There is nothing else I could add to such eloquence and sheer rational thinking. Thank you, LJ. Thank you.

By James on October 25th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

LJ and think not:

Let me sum up your points: If, may, probably, accusation, had there been, should have been, could very well be, why, if, if, why, if, and if.

NOT A SINGLE DEFINITIVE STATEMENT IN THE WHOLE POST.

Here’s something definitive: the poor sap resigned.

Kinda like poor sap AndersEn resigning. All because of an allegation.

And that’s why Dr. AndersEn no longer tucks his seven kids into bed each night and writes a $10,000 alimony and child support check EACH month to his wife who only alleged his bad behavior?

Don’t feel so sorry for him

James

I’m sorry that you couldn’t find any definitive statements in my post but that’s your opinion and I guess, for some reason, you wanted everyone to know it. Perhaps you need to read my post again, slowly, maybe with a dictionary.

In your own way, you illustrated my point by showing just how little information you need to make a judgement about this “poor sap.” I believe the only reason you bring up the Anderson situation is to say that this will turn out the same way – what a cruel, libelous and absolutely stupid inference.

All it takes is an accusation to get your vote, simply because a person “said so” and you side with a web site bent on stimulating controversy and is willing to guess at the truth. Should anyone every accuse you of wrongdoing, you must remain true to your decision-making practice and judge yourself guilty without recourse. Maybe a web site like FITS will broadcast it to the world so everyone can make their own snap judgements and your life will be forever changed.

I’ve said what I wanted to say and will not play a “last tag” game with those who feel a need to disagree.

By Think.think... on October 26th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Here are some definitive statements:

The district HAS NOT clarified what the inappropriate communcation was or even if the teacher agreed that it occurred.

The district said it WOULD NOT release the name of the teacher to protect privacy. BUT FITS HAS done so.

The police HAVE NOT filed any charges.

LJ and Think .Think…you both seem to have some sort of personal connection to this story, (person) you obvisouly are not an avid Fits reader or supporter, and keep checking back to read other peoples posts.

Apparently, we treat FITS as you do the truth.

Why would anyone take sic(k) willie’s word for anything. He claims to have broken the story about AndersEn, but a quick Google search proves The State opened that up exactly a month before sic(k) willie.

All sic(k) will can do is “break wind.” Just for the stink.

For example, he once claimed the gub’ner paid off the family of a “poor little black girl” in Beaufort. And he once claimed a Midlands’ official had a Strom problem. Ever hear sic(k) willie prove those claims? We wait, sic(k) will.

It is time to hold sic(k) willie accountable.

Here is a challenge to sic(k) willie. We dare you!

Prove the teacher involved in this is the same one you mentioned by name. Prove it! Provide us a named source willing to go on the record.

Then give specifics about what your cowardly source claims happened.

Are you a responsible blog’ournalist or just a tabloid rumor monster?

Put up, or shut up!

LJ – Your comment…”Had there been proof or apparent proof, it should certainly have been a police matter.” You’re right… should have been a “police matter”. But remember – this is Lexington-Richland School District 5.

By Underdog on October 27th, 2008 at 9:56 am

Little Miss Muffet – You say that L. J.’s comment ”Had there been proof or apparent proof, it should certainly have been a police matter.” is right, then declare that it “should have been a “police matter””. Take your proof to the authorities. If you have no proof, wait for the facts before becoming part of an uninformed lynch mob.

I don’t condemn nor defend the school district, but consider the possibility that the accusation may have been so minor and unsupported that it was not a police matter. IF that were the case, a board already under scrutiny might want action of some kind just to show that the matter did not get swept under the rug. Maybe the real victim has already been identified by FITS.

By Think.think... on October 27th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

If there was proof, it would have been on the news. This is a district that will run with something, especially if it has proof. Kind of like showing the bodies of the Hussein brothers on tv. Good for the war..ahem…referendum. Don’t you think if they had him dead to rights, they would have made the teacher write something more on the resignation than inappropriate communication? But they ARE letting it go, not good publicity. Ergo, they have nothing.

By more of the same on October 28th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

We all buy LJ’s point of view – right? The teacher had resigned by the end of last week with no comment from law enforcement (Sheriff’s office) and the Board accepted the teacher’s resignation was it last night? So it was all based on what? Nothing, and the Board’s lawyers did what ? Did they all go out to lunch when the Board voted so they know nothing either? This is the same Sheriff’s office that got a call from the District office from a female employee that Dr. AndersEn was out of control. What was done in that case? I surely hope this wasn’t another cover up just before the vote on the bond referendum….

By Think.think... on October 28th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

NO but I would think/hope that the child’s parents would push the issue. There is nothing you can trade me to keep me silent if I have proof to protect my child and keep other children from being in harm’s way.

By Missin Browder-- student on October 30th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Ok so all of this is really unnecessary. Browder was a really good teacher no matter what any of yall gotta say. He was actually the FIRST good social studies teacher I have had since like 6th grade. I don’t know who the person was that said something to the administrators or whoever about it, but I hope they understand now what they have done. Now that Browder is gone for going on the 3rd week now, we’ve had nothing but STUPID subs. Nobody has come to talk to us about it or anything. Teachers don’t want to talk about it, administrators act like they don’t hear you when you ask them questions so the students are basically suffering the most here. Grades come out on Monday, and I’m pretty sure all of his previous students grades’ are going to SUCK from here on out. Browder if you’re reading this, just know that we miss you and really want you to come back. We see you still have your Simpson’s in the class, and as long as we see that we know there still is hope left for you to come back :). Because we know that you would never leave your Simpson’s anywhere. I’d rather take a quiz and notes with the crazy extra credit questions everyday then what we’ve gone through the past few weeks (although I know you’ve gone through more)please come back, we need you to finish with your “hallway teaching” –that was funny. Browder we gotta finish the stuff about the coliseum Caesar.(i spelled it right, aren’t you proud?) the subs wont even let us use your hall passes. COME BACK PLEASE!! WE MiSS YOU!!

To Little Miss Muffett: You are certainly right about this being District V. Just full of lies. They have the Irmo News only reporting what they want told. Noone knows what happened to the last financial officer. Not to mention Lee Bollman’s disappearance. He was the assistant to the superintendent and disappeared at the same time as the financial officer. I called Irmo News and they said the District office was keeping this really quiet. What ever happened to the two coaches at Chapin High who were involved with students? Did they turn in their certificates to the state. It seems like this Board tells what they want to and sweeps the rest under the rug. Oh well, until enough people get concerned I guess they will get away with it.
