Actually, she _is_ drawing a paycheck. Note that they even said that they “fired” her.

The confusion is because she gets her paycheck from the Republican party rather than directly from the McCain campaign. So to the campaign, she’s a “volunteer” but she’s paid by the party to “volunteer.” If you’re wondering why, remember that McCain is on public financing and only gets so many million to spend for the whole campaign.

Andrew Sullivan is reporting the McCain camp took her story and turned it up a notch by adding other provocative details, which really has to suck now that she’s admitted to making the shit up.

I’ve not seen any other claims or documented reports of her having “mental illness” although the fact that she went to such lenghts might lead one to think that.

This could the poin where the McCain campaign has finally jumped the shark, if you don’t include all those other moments like “suspending the campaign” and selecting Sarah Palin.
