Bowden Fired

It’s official.

Despite on-again, off-again rumors coming out of Tigertown USA, Clempson University has fired head coach Tommy Bowden.

Sources had informed FITS last week that Bowden would be fired if he lost to Wake Forest last Thursday – which he did – but over the weekend and throughout the day Monday it appeared as though a controversial $4 million buyout clause would keep the beleaguered coach in control.

Rumors swirled over the weekend nonetheless, with sources again telling us that Bowden would be fired on Monday.

It turned out those sources were right …

The Bowden era at Clempsun will officially end with a press conference this afternoon naming Tigers’ receiving coach Dabo Swinney as Bowden’s interim replacement.

Bowden was 72-45 in ten seasons at Farmertown, with a 3-5 bowl record and a 7-2 record against South Carolina.

The Mad Scientist has also been canned. I wonder if Bowden would still be at Clemson if he’d fired Spence after the Weak Forest beatdown? Or the mastermind behind the tater’s inept o-line, Brad Scott.

LOL @ your “sources”

What a waste of cash;

In this budget climate, maybe some of these wealthy Clempsun donors could spare $4 million to prop up the academic side of the university. They say they love the university so much, but the rest of us keep paying higher and higher taxes and higher and higher tuition.

Clempsun is laying off professors, saying there isn’t any money, but they darn sure got the money to buy out Bowden’s contract. I love my Southern college football, but some priorities seemed a little effed up here.

By TigerJeff on October 13th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

My buddy sells real estate in Clemson. He swears Spurrier bought a huge house on Lake Hartwell over the weekend!!

By Clay Pit Crew on October 13th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

I think Bowden being fired is a step forward for Clemson, everyone seems really excited of what a new coach might bring. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
