Is Loss To Wake Bowden’s End?

Clempsun University Athletics Director Terry Don Phillips says he doesn’t like to fire football coaches in mid-season, but Tommy Bowden may have just given him no choice in the matter.

Rarely has a team this talented fallen this far, this fast, and the Farmers’ ugly 12-7 loss to No. 21 Wake Forest last night is just the latest in a long line of disappointments for a team that started the season with a Top Ten national ranking but has quickly descended into mediocrity.

It’s also the second straight fourth quarter collapse by Clempsun (3-3, 1-2 Anybody Can Compete), a sign that the Tigers lack mental toughness despite their self-proclaimed “No Fear” approach to last night’s “must-win” game.

Clearly, the players shoulder a lot of the blame for Clempsun’s slide, but last night’s ESPN telecast was replete with references to problems stemming from “coaching” (or a lack thereof), and fans in Farmertown (who have never really liked Bowden to begin with) certainly took note of that.

Clempsun has perhaps the most talented group of athletes on its campus since its national championship team 27 years ago, but Bowden can’t seem to turn that into anything beyond disappointment.

We continue to hear conflicting reports today as to what Clempsun plans to do about it, but stay tuned as it’s becoming increasingly clear that Bowden’s decade-long tenure in Tigertown is rapidly drawing to a close …

Tommy Boutdone has used his last life. He’ll probably throw Rob Spence under the bus as a short-term fix, but ultimately his failure to win these relatively minor games and compete for the ACC Title … again … will lead to his dismissal later this year. In the meantime, AD Terry Don Phillips says he’ll not discuss Boutdone’s future until the season is over. We reached that point last night, but Phillips still refuses to talk. So the bigger question is: when will the Tater’s Board of Directors fire Phillips?
