Walk This Way (She Told Us To)
Every once in awhile, we’re a little too clever for our own good.
We like to think there are reasons behind the things we write, but then a controversial issue like former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers’ connections to the University of South Carolina pops up, and we’re suddenly at a complete loss as to our own motivations for covering it …
Sure, a flood of people have told us that Ayers is now a “respected” educator, and that we shouldn’t be alarmed that our state’s largest University paid him to come speak on at least two occasions to South Carolina public school children.
And no, he obviously didn’t bomb the campus, or teach these kids how to bomb the campus (or how to pull off jailbreaks or rob an armored truck while murdering two New York cops in the process).
Nor did Ayers teach them how to brag about doing those sorts of things in statements which were made right around the time he was helping launch the U.S. Senate career of a guy who is pretty much assured at this point of becoming our next President – a guy who joined him in funneling millions of dollars into the same sort of left-wing groups that spawned his Weather Underground.
No, Ayers was invited here to Columbia, S.C. to “celebrate teachers,” which is certainly a fine and dandy thing to do.
And so clearly, we must have been off our rocker to suggest that a guy like Bill Ayers might not be somebody our University would want to affiliate itself with – particularly when it involves K-12 students from two public school districts sitting in the audience.
Honestly, what possessed us to think that a radical socialist who at one point wanted to blow people off the face of the earth could be any more – or any less – deserving of “respect” than, say, a radical socialist who just wants to blow up our national debt?
And so while people (rightfully) protested in conservative Greenville, S.C. when President Shrub came to speak, it was obviously foolish of us to expect any outrage for Ayers being invited not once – but six times – to bring his “respected” views to USC.
Seriously, people, what where we thinking?
After a lot of introspection, all fingers point squarely to a gam obsession on the part of our founding editor, who goes through Google Alerts for “Sarah Palin Legs” like John Holmes went through ’80’s porn stars.
He saw Sarah walk that way (and then keep walking that way), and apparently just couldn’t help himself …
