Veepin’ It Up - LIVE

By Mande Wilkes • on October 2, 2008

Editor’s Note: Feel free to add your own observations in the comments section before, during and after tonight’s Vice-Presidential debate tonight between Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden …

Our moderator tonight is Mande Wilkes, who will not only be updating us with her observations on the debate, but incorporating your comments and e-mails into the live-blogging as well. Remember to e-mail Mande directly if you’ve got a question or comment you want her to insert into the post … her e-mail is mande@fitsnews.com

10:48 p.m. -  I’m getting slammed with emails asking me to name a winner. The thing is, they both turned in a strong perfomance. But, as commentor Don Johnson has noted, a “draw” ends up being a win for Palin. Such is the silver lining in getting blistered for two straight weeks, people.

10:36 p.m. - I’ll be up for a while…keep it coming with your comments and emails for the inevitable postmortem.

10:34 p.m. - Predictable closing statements, down to Palin’s obligatory reference to Ronald Reagan. Seriously, if Republicans are all supposed to be Jesus freaks, it sure does seem like Reagan is the real JC.

10:30 p.m. - Palin doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of compromise. For her to say that she’s never compromised is just downright gratuitous, especially when she explains that bipartisanship has kept her from having to compromise. Isn’t bipartisanship kind of, I don’t know, synonymous with compromise?

10:24 p.m. - Sic broke free of the binds and escaped from the hallway closet to find that I’ve usurped the place. It was touch-and-go there for a second, but he decided to let me continue my little experiment…I know, you’re so welcome. Currently Mr. Sic is making inappropriate remarks about Palin, proving that he’s no worse for the wear and that no founding editors were harmed in the making of this live-blog.

10:15 p.m. - Commentor Lee agrees that there’s too many facts and figures, especially from Biden. His preppers obviously set him up to be the foil to Palin’s predicted n’er-do-well performance. But she’s turning out to be an “October Surprise,” leaving Biden looking totally overwrought and pedantic.

10:10 p.m. - Commentor Don Johnson has emailed me to say that he’s impressed with Palin’s performance, and to ask what I think of it. I’m a tough crowd, particularly when it comes to Palin, and even I’m impressed. She’s firm, coherent, cute, endearing…Like DJ Slick predicted before the start of the debate, she’s certainly setting herself up for a 2012 presidential run.

10:05 p.m. - Ok, this nuanced foreign stuff is losing me. My attention is now officially off of the substantive stuff and on Palin, specifically with regard to this topic.

9:56 p.m. - This part’s shaping up to be like a redux of last Friday’s presidential debate with all the appeals to Jewish voters. Palin and Biden are going strong with the points about Israel’s security threat in the face of Iran. They’re taking my advice…good for them. But they’ve got to be careful, because they need the Jewish vote and the young vote - and it’s en vogue for young Jews to be dubious about Israel’s sovereignty.

9:47 p.m. - No surprises on the answers about the Iraq war. Predictable party-line pandering. Except when Palin went after Obama’s voting record on funding the war: She made her point *and* maintained some mystery with her “that’s another story” finish.

9:41 p.m. - Biden did a good job of pointing to specifics on Obama’s stance on gay rights. Palin’s punking out on the topic, at least from a Republican standpoint, reiterating her “tolerance” for alternative lifestyle. Sure she paid lip service to tradition, but her PC “tolerance” throwback is just weak, considering her value-driven positions.

9:33 p.m. - Commentors Andy and Rick agree that Palin’s forgetting her party affiliation, especially on the topic of the bailout. Now she’s going all Al Gore on climate change, declaring not only that it exists but that it’s within our control. She’s clearly been coached to go after the moderates and Independents.

9:25 p.m. - Good catch for Palin on Obama’s energy record, and a nice segue into reiterating her own record on the issue. It’s also good that she made light of her own inexperience, quipping that she’s only been at this five weeks.

9:23 p.m. - Both candidates seem to know their stuff tonight. There’s plenty of facts and figures, which I expected from Palin but honestly didn’t see coming from Biden. He’s not the one with something to prove, yet he’s acting like he is. I know some people like all the references to facts, but I think that obfuscates the true point of the evening - which is for voters to get acquainted with the vibe of each candidate.

9:20 p.m. - Glad to see that Palin’s relented on that beehive bouffant. She looks good, though I expected a nice punch of color. I’d be feeling the courtroom suit she’s rockin’ if it were like tangerine-colored or something. Even a colored piping on her jacket would be welcome.

9:12 p.m. - Umm, did she forget that she’s a Republican? Demanding “strict oversight” to protect little ol’ us from “predatory lenders?” Her indictment of the financial sector is even more seering than Biden’s. What’s up with that, Sarah?

9:10 p.m. Palin’s milking that good ol’ girl thing, starting off with a “you betcha…” She’s obviously trying to build on that girl-next-door Middle America persona she’s cultivated over the past week. So far, she’s connecting.

9:07 p.m. - Biden starts off strong. Right off the bat, he sets out a bullet-list about Obama’s economic plans, punctuating that with a clincher about how that differentiates from McCain’s plan.

9:04 p.m. - Commentor Natasha wants to know what I think of the media’s coverage of Palin. In politics as in pop, sex sells. And honestly, after a full year of Obamamania, all the Palin focus is a welcome change.

8:45 p.m. - The good people over at SC Hotline might be right about Palin handing Biden his ass tonight. That’s kind of my hunch too, especially since she’s been raked over the coals for two straight weeks. I’m scared she’s itching to prove everyone wrong, and to that end I believe she’s prepped a ton for tonight. Still, I don’t hold much hope for her…You know what they say about lipstick on a pig, and all.

8:42 p.m. - I’m getting so buttered up by (so much more than a) commentor DJ Slick that I just might have to slip into my old bedroom and do the nude-blogging thing after all.

8:32 pm. - Commentor DJ Slick anticipates that Palin can use tonight to position herself as the 2012 nominee. I agree. America’s determined to elect Pussy for President, no matter how much it reeks.

8:27 p.m. - If nothing else, Palin’s infused the election season with some comic relief. This one’s my favorite. And this is a close runner-up.

8:21 p.m. - I kind of miss Hillary already, and the debate hasn’t even started yet. I imagine Hillary’s gearing up for some vindicaton right about now.

8:14 p.m. - Joe Biden’s got to be feeling pretty bipolar right now. Lest he look like he’s bludgeoning a woman, he’s got to handle Palin with the kid-gloves that guys used with ladies last century - and he’s got to do it without trampling the sensibilities of the Democratic feminists, who no doubt want to see him make her man up tonight.

8:00 p.m. - As prelude to the kiss that commentor Tiger is so sure is coming, I’m reading some incisive predictions. Also am watching Chris Matthews wax omnisciently about Sarah Palin’s “intellectual curiousity.”

7:54 p.m. - Is anyone else having internet issues? An area outage forced me to my parents house, dousing my plans to nude-blog. I’m as sorry as you are.

7:39 p.m. - Hi Tiger! Sic didn’t advise one way or the other, as we’ve got him tied up and gagged in the hallway closet. Seriously, do you think he willingly gave me control of this site? As if. But, if he were free to comment, his advice would indeed have to do with me kissing Palin.

I am sure this will be laughingly impartial seeing as sic is on the mccain payroll. so tell us mande - what did sic tell you? kiss her ass even if she bombs (which she will)?

By Biden's Assassination Insurance Agent on October 2nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Borrowing a few clever ideas from Ms. Coulter, I would have to say that Palin’s best ammunition is to remind “Behiden” I mean “Biden” that he voted against the 1973 Alaskan pipeline bill. As Ann so appropriately put it, “This is like having been a Nazi sympathizer during WWII”

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Mande, Didn’t think it was possible, but Sarah actually gives you a run for your money as my ideal of a true woman! I wish you hadn’t mentioned nude blogging, though. I’m hyperventillating.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm

I will briefly depart from my normally immature and irreverent thoughts with this observation: this election is regretably over. Sarah cannot save McCain. He tried to grandstand last week, and he blew it. This economic mess, so conveniently timed, will deliver the White House to Obama. Sarah, however, can do some good tonight by establishing herself as the standard bearer in 2012. I hope the strategy is to let Sarah be Sarah. Biden will have to lay one hell of a turd tonight for the media to even acknowledge that Sarah had the subject-verb thing going. Still, she can lay a great foundation for the future.

Now, if only she would lay me. Oh shit. I’m sorry. I couldn’t control myself. Habit.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:29 pm

I miss Hillary’s ankles.

I really think what happened to the Clinton machine this year is beautiful. Spend your entire career using, abusing, exploiting, and intimidating everyone, and then, experience the agony of rejection when they finally get the chance to stick it to you. Almost worth an Obama presidency.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Commentor? So much more than that.

I believe there’s nothing flacid about Sarah. In fact, I’m certain she would be much more determined and decisive than her running mate.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Incidentally, like your eyes, Pussy for President was a work of art.

By SCHotline Intern's on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Just a personal opinion and guess but we believe that Palin will hand Biden his ass on a platter and Joe will show his… History does seem to repeat itself…

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:46 pm

You’re gonna shut down Sic’s little make-believe world here with all the traffic that will generate.

Don’t you think middle America should be at least a little angry that you have to possess an Ivy League degree and be able to talk — not do — just talk the way the media elite believe a President should talk?

And I’m starting a Mande shrine right freaking now!

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:48 pm

We may think she wins, but he’s got to fart in church during Granny’s funeral for her to get any play at all.

Did I say “any play?”

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:49 pm

you ever tried putting lipstick on a pig?

By just me on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Our moderator tonight is Mande Wilkes who . . . will prove yet again that she has even less intellect than Sarah Palin.

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Mande, how do you think the networks are handling the hype, too much too little on poor ol’ Palin?

By PalinRocks on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm

She looks hot tonight! Great shoes!

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Keep it coming. I’m not near a tv. Will have to watch this one on dvr.

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm

First impressions?

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Connecting? as in kissing you?

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 pm

She’s getting her a$$ handed to her on the deregulation issue…

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:15 pm

I’m glad her hair isn’t in a beehive tonight…

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Shes nervous, she missed a chance to hang the present economic issues on the Dems by blaming wall street….she chose the party line. Joes smirking, Joe knows he hurt her.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Shes not attacking as she should. Shes being nice.

By PalinRocks on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Where’s the comment on Biden’s suit and hair?

By Andy on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm

On the lending crisis she needs to lighten up Wall Street and point out that the Dems forced banks to lend to people who couldn’t afford the payments. If they hadn’t done that, none of this would have happened.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Palins hair and suit….screw that….Shes a doll and shes not on her game.

By Helvidius on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Palin just dropped the ball on the question what promise have you made that you will have to take off the table b/c of the bailout. The correct answer is “I’m not from Washington, so I haven’t had to make any promises to special interest groups.”

Ditto on her I’ll out regulate barrack on those damn wall street capitalists.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:32 pm

My wife says their both playing nice and neither are really answering the questions.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Agree Andy

By just me on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:33 pm

She just BLEW the climate change question. The first half of her response made no sense whatsoever. No answer; no specifics.

By Andy on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Because the media had painted Palin as an idiot, she is going to exceed expectations — even though she is not doing that well.

By Sally Calder on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm

i don’t know why mccain’s team won’t take advantage of the history of fannie/freddie/Community Reinvestment Act and the fact that Repubs tried over and over to reign in that whole mess. they are bending over and taking it. biden lied between his teeth and won’t be called on it. sarah could have handed him his ass on a platter, but she didn’t take the opportunity. i don’t get it.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm

She just blew it again, she just pissed off her biggest base.

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Biden is like a kid in a candy store. I mean, look at his smirk. He’s enjoying this. Poor Palin, she’s nervous, I’m waiting for the pitbull with lipstick and going anti-party line… :(

Obama won the election this week… Damnit

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Now shes starting to be Sarah….

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I believe you may be right Natasha

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I want to see some blood. Is this thing picking up the pace yet?!?

By Natasha on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Yeah, Mande, that was a good response, but now it seems like she’s nervous, just reading notes… Come on Palin, kick Biden to the curb!!!

By bill on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm

this whole thing is crap. Both side spouting crap. Nothing can be learned except who spouts crap the best.
crap

By bill on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm

she should say less crap. Let him say more crap.

he who says most crap loses, me thinks.

By bill on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm

crap spewer Biden is getting a crappy expression. He is crap-ass mad. That is a mistake, as people like their crap served nicely.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm

To late…the opportunity has passed. If Sarah had thrown him at the beginning , she could have rattled him and caused him to be stupid, instead she stayed on the “good old boys in the senate” party line to long.

By Don Johnson on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Tiger,

Sic is on the McCain payroll? Have you seen Sic’s positions on…… well….. everything? Ha-Ha. Get a clue. If you are going to post here, at least read the site for a day or two.

By Don Johnson on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Palin is holding her own. That’s what most people expected.

By bill on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Biden’s manner reminds me of this quote…

I’m not a dictator. It’s just that I have a grumpy face.

Augusto Pinochet

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Shes starting to hold her own…taking it to Joe.

By Lee on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm

I am feeling stupid…I can’t keep up with Biden. So many facts, figures ,plans, and claims. My head is spinning.

I can’t believe that “non wonks” can understand him…or like him.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Hey Mande,
I’m thinking about ending my strike against the tyrannical Sic and coming back to the world of his goofy, seldom read blog. As his most irrepressible, adorable, and testosterone-filled contributor, I think collaborating with his most talented agent provocateur would be cool. What say you?
DJ Slick — still on strike

By Lee on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Biden lives in a multi million dollar compound, on the waterfront. He is in the worlds most exclusive club. He is rich. Why do we let him get away with that joe 6 pack crap.

By just me on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:17 pm

To use her own words - I think she is ramping it up a little - although my husband said she just had a “Palin moment” - and that was not a compliment.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:18 pm

As with the majority of Bullshit artists Joe covers B/s with numbers that won’t be checked until tomorrow. He thinks he sounds smart, not understanding that when people hear numbers it rings a b/s bell.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Most people don’t know Joes past Lee, they buy into his Bull.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Palin is kicking ass. She showed up, Joe is nothing but talking points. what an idiot.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Does anyone else get the felling that Joe know the questions beforehand? He’s awful glibe.

By Lee on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I would do palin. But not Joe

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:27 pm

10:24 ain’t me….I don’t think she’s kicked ass, I do think she missed opportunities.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Sarahs closing uplifting….Joe whining

By Don Johnson on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm

So, Mande (or Sic), what was the result?

Palin did no harm. She held her own. Even looked good at times. Biden was predictable. Tired at times, feisty at times. Kind of like the first presidential debate. A draw at best for both camps.

By Don Johnson on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 pm

But a “draw” is a win for Palin.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm

I’m afraid that there was nothing that changed my mind about her….while I have little use or regard for John, I think its for him to drive my vote to the Constitutional Party.

By rick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Mande, thanks

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm

a draw? can’t be. media will not permit that!

By Jeffrey Sewell on October 2nd, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Palin: Clear winner tonight, “Period”.

By DJ Slick on October 2nd, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Ok. No collaboration. I’m going back to the picket line.

By Jeffrey Sewell on October 2nd, 2008 at 11:18 pm

Democrats praise Palin performance, hmmm?
