Is Jesus In You?

By fitsnews • on September 26, 2008

We never really figured out where stealing money from sick and old people fit into God’s will, but such is the “calling” of televangelists - a special breed of pharisees for whom we’re pretty sure there’s a special place in hell.

That’s why today’s news that televangelist Tony Alamo got busted on child pornography charges (he wasn’t just looking at it, he was making it), isn’t even remotely surprising. Sadly, it’s the latest in a long line of “falls from grace.” Of course to assume that sexual predators like Alamo, Jim Baker or Jimmy Swaggart had “grace” to begin with is kind of like assuming that Bill Clinton has an interest in skinny chicks.

Anyway, from the Washington Post:

Alamo and his late wife Susan were street preachers in Los Angeles before forming a commune near Saugus, Calif. Susan Alamo died of cancer in 1982; Alamo claimed she would be resurrected and kept her body on display for six months while followers prayed.

Alamo was convicted of tax-related charges in 1994 and served four years in prison after the IRS said he owed the government $7.9 million. Prosecutors in that case argued that Alamo was a flight risk and a polygamist who preyed on married women and girls in his congregation.

Wait … he kept his wife’s body on display for six months after she died? While followers prayed?

Jesus, there are some stupid people in this world. And when we say “Jesus,” we’re actually not using the Lord’s name in vain, we’re speaking conversationally.

And in case you’re wondering what Alamo’s excuse for being a child pornographer is, he told reporters yesterday that he’s not and people are attacking him because “Jesus is in him.”

Nice.

That was Jimmy Swaggart, and his only crime was getting caught with hookers … twice.
