Speak American, Man
In their latest attempt to appeal to a major contender in the Race of Disenfranchised Firstsâ„¢, John McCain and Barack Obama are airing ads in Spanish.
Besides the adverts’ earsplitting stilted diphthongs (look it up), they present a whole other perplexing conundrum: Why do they exist?
Ostensibly, Spanish ads exist to ensure equal access to political information. Makes sense, at least if you’re a zealot for contrived egalitarianism; doesn’t make sense if, like us, you’re a xenophobic champion for ethnocentrism.
Either way, “other-than-English” ads just absolutely do not belong. Unless gratuity is their entire raison d’etre – and, obsequious as Obama and McCain are, there has to be some measure of perceived utilitarian value – these ads are totally out of place.
So what practical purpose do Spanish adverts serve?
The answer is so obvious that most people don’t even ask the question, missing out completely on the wily obfuscation it presents.
First, the obvious: Obama and McCain air Spanish ads because the Hispanic vote is crucial in the current “thisclose” election. Did you get that? “Thisclose?” Nevermind …
Anyway, the Hispanic bloc is electoral gold, up for grabs by whichever candidate best mines for it.
This is the case, incidentally, because neither political party really represents Hispanic interests: The Democrats have their (wet)backs with regard to immigration, but the Republicans appeal to their traditional Catholic values.
This is all to say that both Obama and McCain desperately need Hispanic support – and they’re going for it, a la Spanish ads.
But why Spanish? Why spend the money – and airtime – to replicate the English ads that are already in place?
It’s not tax dollars they’re spending, which is to say that the politicians break from their usual habits and allocate funds with painstaking prudence.
So the Spanish ads must be worth it, right?
And now for the obfuscation: McCain and Obama air Spanish ads because many (most?) Hispanics don’t speak English. Okay, that’s probably obvious too, at least to anyone who’s had a house built or renovated this decade.
The real obfuscation is that no person can vote unless they can speak English. That’s not opinion, people, it’s a straight-up fact.
Only U.S. citizens can vote, and citizenship is contingent upon a demonstration of basic English proficiency.
So the Spanish ads? They must necessarily mean that the candidates are vying for voters who aren’t even supposed to be voting.
That won’t actually stop them from voting, of course, since adhering to laws is just so … gauche and antiquated.
After all, citizenship – or even a visa or a green card – well, that’s just a minor technicality these days.

Well Mande, may I suggest a trip to Miami where citizenship oaths are frequently given in Cuban Spanish. What you may also want to look at is the ability of illegal immigrants to register and vote in such wonderfully diverse places like San Fran, Chicago, New York and the host of other sanctuary cities. You’re correct in your assumption that these are out of place but the reality is this is what the businesses in America wanted and got. A cheap labor force that as long as they keep their heads down and keep doing the employers business, all is well. Until the American voter protects his right and voter ID is required across the land we’ll always have the dead, the disabled, and the illegal using the system for their gain.

Mande, Mande. Geez, you’re a dumb b*tch. You’re an embarassment to the Bar(assuming you’ve passed and that’s a BIG assumption).
You flunked con law when it came to your bizarre 13th Amendment analysis. Now you’ve shown your ignorance when it comes to the 14th Amendment.
I’ll type slowly for you so try to keep up. Naturalized citizens are required to show some proficiency in English. The 14th Amendment kicks in here. Do you understand people born in the United States are C I T I Z E N S ?
No one born here has to prove anything. Something you had best be thankful for as you obviously couldn’t pass the civics part of the citizenship test. Say a prayer for your XX chromosomes as your girlfriend-beatin’ boss obviously is running an Affirmative Action shop. An aberrant Y chromosome and you’re at the day labor center.

Well, Rick, I see you match the authorette’s IQ.
Criminal prosecutions, indictments, and arrests of any nature are public documents all across esta pais.
Why don’t you give us a cite for ANY arrest, prosecution, or indictment for an illegal immigrant regisering and voting?
Let me know when you’ll be at the day labor center. I need some leaves raked. I’ll leave the light on for your cite. Chao.

“No one born here has to prove anything. Something you had best be thankful for as you obviously couldn’t pass the civics part of the citizenship test”.
RBB-
More the shame that some knuckle draggers don’t have to prove their ability to do more than run off at the suck. And you kiss your momma with that mouth…she must be proud.
Looking forward to a post in which you actually are able to string together a coherent argument.
“Only U.S. citizens can vote, and citizenship is contingent upon a demonstration of basic English proficiency”.
You’re premise is correct as far as it goes, again in practical application check Miami’s citizen oath administration. Our bleeding heart society has watered down the concept of proficiency since it is inherently “racist” in application. Define proficient. As always, we’ve allowed emotion to overcome good old fashioned common sense. “Feet wet, Feet dry”

Rickie, you can run (off at the mouth) but you can’t hide.
Give us a cite, Rickie. Tell us where all these illegal immigrants are registering and voting, Rickie.
Can’t do it, can you, Rickie. Cause it ain’t happening. It’s all a figment of your Repugnant Party mythology.
Must be that Lee Jefferson Hammond Beauregard Segregation Akademy edukation for you and Mande that’s kickin’ in. Her premise is completely wrong and ignorant. You said “atta girl” and got busted.
Sorry, Rickie, thanks for playing, try again soon.

Aw RBB see ya cain’t reed can ya…..the answers in the posts. Once again you fail to heed the old saying….better to shut up and be thought stupid than to opens ones yap and remove all doubt. Now run off and cry on your mommas shoulder because a mean old man said bad things to you. Try looking it up instead of crying foul and thinking your proving your point by sticking your tongue out. Now take your toes from your mouth and use what little education to factually prove me wrong. You might wanna look up the research on Chicago’s last election results at the numbers of dead, criminal and illegals that voted……

Give us a cite or a link, Rickie.
