Runaway Production

California lawmakers pulled the plug on an incentive package designed to keep Hollywood movie-makers from leaving the state to film their flics, setting up a potential showdown with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger wanted to provide tax incentives to stop what’s called “runaway production,” but the bill was defeated after one Democratic opponent referred to the measure as an “unfunded welfare program for movie producers.”

South Carolina is one of several states that have benefited from the “runaway production” phenomenon, but the last major movie to film here was a complete and total disaster – well, with the exception of Jessica Biel’s excruciatingly hot stand-in.

No word yet on whether California’s loss will be South Carolina’s gain, but odds are if there’s a way to completely pooch-screw this “golden” opportunity, lawmakers in the Palmetto State will find it …
