Hanna Heading For Myrtle Beach

As our favorite Wonder Pet “Ming Ming” likes to say, “this is seewious.” According to the latest national weather reports, Tropical Storm Hanna has changed her mind about wanting to come to South Carolina, and is now set to make landfall on the Grand Strand early Saturday morning.

Gov. Mark Sanford has issued a voluntary evacuation order for residents of Georgetown and Horry Counties, although it appears no mandatory evacuations (or lane reversals) will be needed given the storm’s relatively weak strength.

“With what we’re seeing in this storm track, I’d again ask that people in mobile homes or campers, on property in low-lying areas or on property in wind prone areas to be prudent in their decision to evacuate,” the governor said. “This storm is almost certainly going to mean wind damage and power outages, so even if you’re not in one of the more damage prone areas, it’s incredibly important that everyone prepare in terms of having a full tank of gas, a storm kit and an evacuation plan as this and potentially other storms head our way in the future.”

As much as we’ve criticized Sanford on other fronts, his administration has always done a good job handling hurricanes, implementing a new system of lane reversals and coordinating the state’s response with local government (and local law enforcement) much better than previous administrations.

Sanford’s team will have to keep it up, too, as a much bigger storm - Hurricane Ike - is lurking in the Atlantic just behind Hanna. And behind Ike is yet another system, Tropical Storm Josephine.

Incidentally, Sic Willie was watching Wonder Pets when the first severe weather warning flashed on the screen, prompting him to stomp into our office screaming that “the television is talking adult!”
