Gustav Lands, Hanna Lurks

Hurricane Gustav made an earlier-than-expected landfall just South of New Orleans this morning, but the city appears to have dodged a major catastrophe thanks to the storm’s diminished strength. Louisiana isn’t out of the woods yet, obviously, and we’ll continue to keep an eye on Gustav throughout the day, but initial reports are that it doesn’t appear the beleaguered city is in store for another Katrina-sized disaster.

Yesterday, Gustav was a Category Four monster with sustained winds of over 150 miles per hour, but the storm dipped to a Category Two (with 115 mph max sustained winds) by the time it hit the gulf coast this morning. That’s still a very dangerous storm, but nowhere near as bad as weather analysts were predicting.

Meanwhile, South Carolina is squarely in the projected path of Tropical Storm Hanna, which forecasters say will develop into a Category 1 hurricane over the next few days. Right now Hannah has Beaufort, SC in the middle of its track, but it could land anywhere from Miami to Northern Virginia, or drift out to sea if we’re lucky.

If Hanna does make landfall, analysts predict it will take place sometime this Friday afternoon.

We can use the rain….Won’t be the first or last storm to traverse the coast. At least if South Carolina gets hit, if people react like Hugo, they’ll get up, dust off, and get to work cleaning up….unlike someone else we all know.
