FITSNews - August 26, 2008 - We actually watched a few minutes of the Democratic National Convention last night (another perfectly good waste of high definition), but it was only during commercials, and each time we flipped over somebody was predictably saying “America wants this” or “America needs that.” To be perfectly honest, we found the Fourth of July edition of John and Kate Plus Eight to be much more indicative of what America really wants - particularly when Kate and the girls baked a strawberry/ blueberry American flag cake. Yummy!
MEET MICHELLE - Anyway, the big news from the Democratic convention was Michelle Obama’s speech, which sought to paint a human face on her husband, Barack, while reintroducing her to the country. We didn’t watch it, because frankly this sort of overtly-contrived “message of the day” crap doesn’t appeal to us - particularly when the message is some fake attempt at relating with ordinary folks.
MEANWHILE - GOP presidential candidate John McCain was doing precisely the same thing on the Jay Leno show in another bit of political theatre that we decided to ditch, this time in favor of an enthralling documentary on Snakehead fishes.
SCHOOL TEACHERS SUPPORT CHOICE - The Voice has another solid post up today showing that public school teachers support school choice in far greater numbers than we would have ever imagined - 46%, in fact, support tax credits compared to to 41% who oppose them. “Many public school teachers have reached the same conclusion held by parents across the nation,” the Voice observes. “If quality instruction and equality of opportunity are the ultimate objective, we need to value education in itself, not just esteem the government apparatus that claims sole license to provide it.” Damn … those kids are almost as good as we are.
DONEHUE’S LAMENT - We thought consultant Wes Donehue’s new website was just a collection of links to other people’s articles, but it appears the mastermind (editor’s note: term used loosely ) of the old “Shot Politics” website is once again venting his spleen. Take today’s treatise, in which he bemoans the fact that social conservative issues have fallen completely off of South Carolina voters’ radar - which is true, they have. Actually, Donehue’s article is an interesting read, and as much as he’s a defender of many failed status quo institutions in this state, we welcome his voice back to the debate …
