Look Out, New Orleans!
HURRICANE GUSTAV IS PLOTTING A FAMILIAR COURSE
FITSNews – August 26, 2008 – The good news? It’s highly unlikely that the federal government could possibly do a shittier job than it did three years ago in botching the Hurricane Katrina disaster …
The bad news? The federal government has a history of failing to meet even the lowest expectations we set for it.
Seriously, the only thing Washington does even remotely well during disasters these days is sending its politicians to get their pictures taken amongst hastily-assembled crowds of racially-diverse victims.
Anyway, (c)lick on the map above to get the latest on Gustav from BoatUS.com, the best hurricane trackers on the web … and let’s hope this thing hits some other country. Like Mississippi …
UPDATE – Jeez … the Mississippi thing was a joke, people.

I wonder what natural disaster of similar size as Hurricane Katrina was handled better by the federal government? Hard to find any.
Maybe the problem isn’t the federal government’s response as much as a local populace trained to think Washington DC is there to take care of their every need. I lived in earthquake country for years and went through several bad ones. The last thing I wanted to see in the aftermath was someone from the federal government– a sure sign I was screwed.
By the way, Katrina hit Mississippi, not New Orleans. As Casey Stengel said, “You can look it up.” The fact that people don’t know that simple thing is testament to what whining to the media about the feds gets you. In Mississippi they got about the business of cleaning up and putting things right instead of crying to the Northeast leftist media.
By Northeast Leftist Media (not really) on August 26th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Monkeydarts, quite simply you are an idiot. Hurricanes are giant storm systems that cover hundreds of miles. Therefore a storm such as Katrina can “hit” more than one place.

This short article will give you some idea of what those people were dealing with at that time. I don’t think your time in “earthquake country” (whatever the hell that means) gives you any right or ability to fairly judge the citizens of the Gulf Coast.

You know what, Monkeydarts? I’m getting real tired of people making ugly comments about the progress in New Orleans. Unlike yourself, apparently, we didn’t have thousands of dollars to immediately rebuild with after the hurricane. We’ve been back here since the Fall after Hurricane Katrina and have had problems getting our insurance companies to even respond to us, qualifying for home rebuilding loans, even getting contractors to sign up on projects where they couldn’t be guaranteed a quick payoff. We’ve been robbed and had our homes stripped of electrical wiring and pipes. We’ve had vultures come in from the outside and practice some stripping of their own under the guise of “reselling architechtural elements”. Until you can stand in our shoes, shut up and keep your snide comments to yourself!

Still the real answer wasn’t addressed….The local and State Government told the Federal Government they didn’t need help and ran like the scalded dogs they were. It’s only after the event when their collective balls were in a crack that they decided to scapegoat the Federal Governments response. And it goes to show the intelligence of the population of New Orleans….they’re once again building below SEA Level knowing that another storm can elimenate them from the Gene pool. Monkeydarts is right, the shear amount of money and aid that went to Katrina survivors (note: not victims since victims are innocents and new orleans has spent decades partying on and asking to be destroyed) is unprecedented, yet all we hear is continued whining that no-one is helping us…the door locks are the same….sue for the smell…..it’s not big enough….it’s not plush enough……waaaaaaaaaaa. Next time, Grow some Balls and help yourselves and leave the rest of us out of it. Self determination and Freedom means making decisions and living with the consequences of those decisions. If I have to hear one more whiny butt tell me of the horrors of having to rebuild below SEA LEVEL I’ll just have to respond with STUPID!!!!!!!!
By had enough of people like this on August 26th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
We didn’t get any of the money everyone’s talking about. We’ve been paying out-of-pocket for a tiny apartment while we try to figure out how to afford to rebuild our vandalized lives. Below sea level…in tornado country…along a fault line…where severe snowstorms are possible…in the path of potential wildfires…when did God make you the Great Decider of Whose Lives Are More Valid, Rickdick?

Seems that moving into a city that is effectively bowl-shaped, that is sinking every year, and that has lost the natural buffers of wetlands seems to be a pretty stupid idea.

You are one sorry SOB for even thinking such a thing, much like putting it in print. Obviously, you have never been to the Great State of Mississippi and you live in ignorance. Bite me!
By rick on August 26th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Sorry that I haven’t responded sooner “Had enough” but as a responsible adult, I had other obligations. Now that they are completed let me respond to your last. First, I’m sure that if you request under the freedom of information act the total cost of federal involvement in Katrina you will find you’re answer. Second, There is no place in this nation that has a risk free environment. We as citizens must determine the amount of risk we are willing to assume by residing in that location. Third, no-one has the right to raid the treasury of the taxpayers money to make them whole simply because a natural disaster caused them to lose their home. Fourth, I didn’t determine whose life was more valid, you did when you failed to adequately prepare for that disaster and then wanted me by my taxes to make you whole again. Fifth, I must commend you on you’re ability to determine within one missive that yes in fact I am a dick and am proud of it. You see, I choose who I’m willing to help or not based upon my willingness to part with my funds, I need no fool to whine about it and con some politician into using my taxes to fix their lack of competency. So amoeba, continue to toil away while whining about the hand life has given you as I’m sure you will eventually be made whole by the sweat of men greater than you. Build your abode below SEA Level, but first amoeba, find valid insurance and learn to swim, for what has come before will come again. When you’ve dried your tears, please read the Constitution, look up self determination and freedom, and please quit whining…..I am truely embarressed by your lack of fortitude.

“lick on the map above” You want to stab at Mississippi but yet you can’t even type a blog correctly. If the map tastes anything like the taste of your a$$ in my mouth right now, I will pass. You f*ing idiot. And some other country????? Go back to English class buddy.
Another thing, I guess you have no regard for human life or otherwise you would just pray that Gustav loses speed all together and none of the gulf area gets any more than a little wind and rain. The people of MS & LA are still trying to get their life back together.

Why don’t you lick on the map. We here in Mississippi don’t “lick” on computer screens.

Click, lick, whatever. We do a lil bode here in Soud Kackilacky.
Of course, it is pretty funny watching you Magnolias get all hot ‘n bothered … guess there’s not much to do anymore now that lynching’s illegal over there.
BTW … when did y’all pass that law? 2007?

I think you managed to piss off all five people in Mississippi that own computers.
By Roberta on August 26th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
You are a true horse’s ass with no regard for your fellow human beings. You have no idea what the people of the Gulf Coast or New Orleans did to prepare for Hurricane Katrina or anything else about either state. You are right. We are backward and ignorant and inbred just like you think, so maybe you will never cross our state lines. Hopefully, your kind will keep your ignorant opinions and leave us alone in our backwoods, unprepared bliss.
By Mark Folse on August 26th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Uh, Rick, I’m not sure where you are getting your facts. A state of emergency was declared in Louisiana as soon as the storm entered the Gulf, and the LNG requested assistance from other states (since someone seems to be using our NG for other purposes, and has taken all of the good equipment somewhere in the far East).
The simple fact is, Louisiana and New Orleans executed their FEMA-approved and exercised emergency plans. When on the Day 3 the calvary (read: FEMA) were supposed to arrive, they were no where in site. The results were seen on national television.
And cgi-bin laden (wow, what a nice screen name), there is a reason that New Orleans is here. Without a bulk handling port at the mouth of the Mississippi agricultural exports from the central US end. Oh, and the import and export of steel and all other bulk commodities. Without even touching on the cultural imporance of New Orleans, shutting down the port would make the Great Depression look like a church picnic.
And anyone wishing this storm on anyone (I have family on the Mississippi Gulf; they’ve been wipped out complete twice in living memory) is not funny. Ever.
You, Rick, are what we call down here a “fuckmook”.
By Ashley on August 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
First of all, do your homework. It did hit Louisiana, and then went on to Mississippi, which by the way, only had a third of the damage we did, and is still rebuilding (you apparently haven’t taken a drive down highway 90 lately, like I have). God bless Mississippi, our neighbors and friends, in their continued struggles and triumphs.
Second, since when are shoddy, federally-constructed levees a natural disaster? Levees here, like levees elsewhere, are a federal project, and a federal responsibility. You want us to take care of them? Fine. Give us the same amount of oil lease revenue royalties that every other coastal state has instead of raping our resources, destroying our wetlands and treating us like a bastard stepchild.
Also, you know what folks, you’re right. We won’t come whining to you again (not that I ever personally did before). And in return, all I ask is that you jackasses don’t whine to us when we keep our oil, our natural gas, our seafood, our strategic port access to the Mississippi. You don’t need what we contribute to this nation, obviously.
By Mincing Words on August 26th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Damn, Fits, did you have any idea you’d stir up all this crap? And what the hell are folks in NO and MI doin’ reading this blog anyhoo?
And “Had Enough,” I think I speak for all (federal) taxpayers when I say this: If you just ACKNOWLEDGE your local government sucks and is mostly responsible for the aftermath of Katrina (instead of, say, George Bush), Rick and the rest of us might be a little more sympathetic. But you went and elected that dumbass MF Neagins AGAIN! (No school buses for NO, we need chartered ones…)
But seriously, why would you go back to a place that is going to get drowned at some point again? I ask the same question of the buttholes in CA who cry everytime the forest fires roll in and say “I just can’t believe it.” It happened last year, and the year before that, and so on, so either people (those in CA or those who go back to NO) are too stupid to continue to exist, or people are aware of the risks and take appropriate precautions.
I don’t think that is too much to ask. Do you?

N’yalins should have taken Daddy’s well-intentioned advice:
And I quote:

The United States should take over Canada… There are 38 states susceptible to natural disasters… The ignornance of people like Rick and Monkeydarts is mind boggling… How can people formulate opinions about New Orleans when they have not been here since the man made disaster. It’s obvious they haven’t stepped foot in New Orleans based on their ignorant comments. If Katrina has taught me anything it is the renewed appreciation I have for the people on the gulf coast and in New Orleans. The thought of living in communities with heartless and arrogant people like Rick and Monkeydarts would be mentally crippling. I count my blessings everyday to live in the gulf coast region with the most hard working, generous and truly hospitable people on the face of the earth. Special thanks to all of the heartless and arrogant people for making me realize how special New Orleans and the gulf coast really is. You inspire me to live nowhere else but New Orleans!
By rick on August 26th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Yep ya’ll are right, thats why half of America spent a year down there pulling your ass out of the mud and in greatful appreciation what do I hear….waaaaaaa. You could move No a hundred miles North and be out of the mud, but like california, you’d rather be rebuilding and crying about the inhumanity of man. If you had thought a moment…like most Americans I’ll help my neighbors recover from a disaster ONCE but when they repeatedly go back for more…..STUPID.
Yep, I’m heartless and arrogant, spent my life watching my ability to support my family be whittled away by whiny butt fucks like ya’ll because you can’t take care of yourselves and spend your time telling the world about the evil gummit not supporting you in the manner you wish to become accustomed. I’m tired of people not being able to pick themselves up, dust off their butts and turn to. There used to be an old saying about when life hands you a lemon, ya make lemon aid. Now its when life hands you a lemon, find Nagin to cry its de gummits fault and why ain’t ya’ll bailing us out. When my taxes go up or my grandchildren are burdened by a bill due because my gummit gives it to support dumbasses that live below sea level….well you get the drift. And Lou, that man made disaster was perpetrated by the people of NO because they elected and supported politicians who made it a habit to take the money for repair of the levees and spend it elsewhere. Once again the people of NO need to take responsibility for their inherent stupidity. Look at their history and you’ll find the true story of this disaster. Its not called the big easy for nothing…..
By Ed D on August 27th, 2008 at 12:17 am
You realize you can do something about this Rick. All you have to do is refuse to buy anything that is produced, travels through, or otherwise connected with a region that is prone to natural disaters. Get all your cronies to join in and you will never have to worry about your “hard earned dollars” going to “bail out” those who chose not to be born and raised in your little slice of disaster free real estate.
Just don’t start whining when your Eden starts getting a bit crowed when the rest of the country realizes they can make just as good a living where you are as anywhere. By the, just where are you located? I got my UHAUL packed and I”ll be there in a jiffy
By Don Johnson on August 27th, 2008 at 6:43 am
Hey all y’all. As someone who lived through Hurricane Andrew, it is possible for a local community to pick itself up and start over. Without federal help. There are a bunch of people here who lived through Hugo. And did that without federal help. In fact, those storms are why FEMA was created. Great job, Feds.
If I lived in New Orleans right now, I’d be filling sandbags, gassing up my car, stocking food, and spending some serious time in church.
If that doesn’t work, we’ll see a repeat of something like this:
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/47959
Maybe Sic Willie can blog about that then. And y’all will be back commenting him … when you can buy new computers.
By Gina on August 27th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Until you’ve gone through it, you have no idea. Not everyone is waiting for a handout or whining Ric. Stop trying to stereotype people that live in New Orleans. Actually, most of the people partying are tourists. Exactly where do all of you negative people live? Do you have snow storms, tornadoes, wildfires, flash floods, earthquakes? You are no different than us. At least us “below sea level” people have several days warning. What do the rest of you have? You’re scrambling around at the last minute, falling below the open crevices of earth or flying around like Dorothy. Lighten up, we all have something to contend with. Gina
By rick on August 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Gee Gina, after a lifetime of living all over the world, surviving hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, blizzards etc. as both a military dependent and a 20 year vet, I think I’m allowed to say….you’re not the only people to be damaged by mother nature. In other words quit whining and get busy. The first year or two is enough…if you can party like theres no tomorrow then you can pick up your dress and rebuild without the plaintive cry of a dislocated child. By the way Ed it’s called free enterprise. Any place on the Gulf coast can take care of NO business should the need arise. You import and distribute,we buy allowing you to poke your chest out and cry, don’t buy if you don’t like it….I’m sure Charleston, Mobile, Brownsville et.al will be more than happy to pick up your slack should you choose not to engage in the free enterprise system any longer because I have no pity or use for whiny butts. For those of the gulf coast that have picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and got back to the business of looking forward….good on ya. For the rest that sit and snivel….don’t worry I’m sure Trent Lott will change you’re diapers. Still think its utter stupidity to rebuild below SEA LEVEL.
By Gina on August 27th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Rick, you still didn’t mention where exactly you live and evidently you can’t read (you know the part about stereotyping people, etc.). Also, I’ve lived in several cities and choose to call NOLA my home.
Please let me know the city you’re in so when you have a natural or not so natural disaster (like NOLA had), I can look you up and see if you are whining…
Have a blessed day and see ya the next time you visit NOLA!
Gina
By rick on August 27th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Such a sweet response and Gina I seriously doubt our ever meeting since I’ve been to NOLA and have found no reason to return there. Aw Gina, I think I’ve made my thoughts known about the people of NO. As I’ve said before, if you’ve picked yourself up, brushed of the dirt and looked to the future…good on ya. Have a great day Gina.
By James on August 27th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
When I saw Katrina’s cloud mass covering the ENTIRE Gulf of Mexico in the days before the storm hit (who the f*ck cares exactly where the storm center hit) I said to myself: “Self, that is one bad mother-fu*in’ storm.”
Apparently those in NOLA had no televisions prior to the disaster – only after looting and carting off big screen televisions on their shoulders did the poor saps enter the 21st century of modern communication gear.
If only the promise would have been: 40 acres, a mule, and a big honkin’ wide-screen plasma television!
Gina – God love ya – having a home directly under a funnel cloud and having an 80 year old maple crush a car like a tin can is no fun either. Nor is going to work for 10 straight days where the temperature does not go above ZERO. Imagine my chuckles when it snows and the knuckle-draggers in South Carolia start soiling their knickers.
Rick – after eating at the government trough your entire life I don’t think you’re the poster boy for preaching “free enterprise”.
